On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the Reformation as a movement focused on the reform, not of the church, but of preaching. The church is whole and complete as a gift of Christ given in word and sacrament, and needs no reform; nor is the institution of the church identical to the God-created reality of word and sacrament. But in order to make sure that what we preach is actually the gospel, Reformation is needed – including a return to the original work that Martin Luther completed in his evangelical movement in Wittenberg.
