Photography and Walking is a podcast about how moving through the world changes the way we see it. Each episode explores photographers, artworks, and places where walking and seeing meet — from city streets to coastlines and blindfolded performances in Venice. Host Philippe Guillaume brings together the history of photography, storytelling, and observation to trace how images map experience step by step.

  • Barefoot in Brixton: Mona Hatoum’s Roadworks
    Oct 21 2026

Mona Hatoum’s Roadworks began with a barefoot walk through Brixton, South London, in 1985. Behind her, a pair of Dr. Martens boots dragged across the pavement, tied to her ankles by their laces. Associated with British police and racist skinheads, the boots turned protection into a burden that followed every step.

In Barefoot in Brixton, Philippe Guillaume explores the performance’s relation to policing, public space and the people who encountered it on the street. Passers-by joked, asked questions and became part of an exchange Hatoum could not control.

The episode also considers how Patrick Gilbert’s black-and-white photograph and the video documentation transform our experience of Roadworks. A still image concentrates the threat; moving footage returns sound, duration and the surrounding neighbourhood.

What does it mean to keep walking when walking does not mean getting away?

    ______

  • The Time Between: Marlene Creates's Trees
    Oct 7 2026

Marlene Creates’s Larch, Spruce, Fir, Birch, Hand, Blast Hole Pond Road, Newfoundland consists of 154 photographs made over almost twenty years. Between 2007 and 2015, Creates photographed 77 trees in the boreal forest surrounding her home in Newfoundland, placing her hand against each trunk. Eleven years later, she returned to photograph the same trees again.

In The Time Between, Philippe Guillaume considers what happened across that interval: black-and-white film became colour digital photography; trees grew, fell or disappeared; and the hand touching them aged.

Moving between Creates’s work, debates around photographic technology, and Guillaume’s own visit to her Boreal Poetry Garden, the episode asks what happens when we stop defending the boundaries of photography and look instead at what is in front of us.

Two photographs give us two moments. But what happens in the time between?

  • Stop: Aoki’s FRUiTS
    Sep 23 2026

    English

Shoichi Aoki’s photographs for FRUiTS magazine transformed the street fashion of Harajuku, Tokyo, into an extraordinary visual archive. Frontal, colorful, and usually full-length, the portraits record people who had already styled and assembled their own public image.

In Stop, Philippe Guillaume considers the encounter the photographs do not show: Aoki noticing someone, approaching that person, and asking them to participate. The episode moves between FRUiTS, relational aesthetics, and Guillaume’s own walking project in London, where strangers constructed his route by giving directions and allowing themselves to be photographed.

What happens before the shutter is pressed, when one walker asks another to stop?
