This conversation on Naked Comedy! with David Zucker became one of Tom Dreesen’s final in-depth interviews. Throughout this episode, Tom generously shares the lessons he learned over more than five decades in comedy—from becoming America’s first Black-and-white comedy team with Tim Reid, to 61 appearances on The Tonight Show, to opening for Frank Sinatra for 14 years. We are honored to preserve and share his wisdom.

In this episode of Naked Comedy!, David Zucker and Ellie Shoja sit down with legendary stand-up comedian Tom Dreesen, whose career spans more than five decades, over 500 national television appearances, 61 appearances on The Tonight Show, and 14 years touring as the opening act for Frank Sinatra.

Tom shares how he went from bartending, construction, and military service to becoming one half of America’s first Black-and-white comedy team with Tim Reid. He talks about performing during a time of intense racial tension, using comedy to bridge divides, and learning the hard way what it takes to survive on stage.

The conversation dives into the craft of stand-up: joke structure, timing, surprise, reading the audience, bombing, building confidence, and why laughter is more than entertainment — it’s healing. Tom also shares unforgettable stories about Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Bob Hope, Gary Sinise, Bob Uecker, Frank Sinatra, and the wild journey from Chicago clubs to opening for one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

In this episode of Naked Comedy!, David Zucker and Ellie Shoja sit down with screenwriter Dale Launer, the writer behind My Cousin Vinny, Ruthless People, and some of the sharpest comedy writing of the last several decades.

Dale shares how My Cousin Vinny grew from a simple legal “what if” into a comedy so accurate it’s now used in law schools across the country. He breaks down the importance of research, airtight plotting, authentic dialogue, and writing scenes that are “relentlessly entertaining” from page one.

The conversation also dives into Dale’s first collaboration with David Zucker on Ruthless People, why he originally did not want the Zucker brothers to direct it, the infamous wrong-number joke, writing for Danny DeVito, and what comedy writers can learn from rejection, character development, and the painful process of cutting jokes that don’t serve the story.

Recorded live with members of the MasterCrash community, this episode is a masterclass in comedy writing, structure, dialogue, and finding the truth inside the joke.
