  • E294 - Busting Myths About Personality Disorders Beyond BPD with Dr. Lois Choi-Kain
    Nov 4 2026
In this episode, Dr. Andy Cutler and Dr. Lois Choi-Kain review common myths about personality disorders beyond borderline personality disorder (BPD) and what clinicians may miss when they focus on BPD alone. They discuss dimensional approaches to diagnosis, clinical clues that personality pathology may be present alongside other psychiatric conditions, and how challenges in clinical trials shape the evidence base for treatment. The conversation also explores how to discuss a diagnosis without blame or stigma, the role of medication management, and practical ways to build therapeutic alliance, maintain boundaries, and respond to challenging interpersonal dynamics. Lois Choi-Kain, MD, MEd, DFAPA, is director of the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute at McLean Hospital and is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on evidence-based, scalable approaches to treating personality disorders, including General/Good Psychiatric Management, mentalization-based treatment, transference-focused psychotherapy, and other pragmatic models of care. Andrew J. Cutler, MD, is a distinguished psychiatrist and researcher with extensive experience in clinical trials and psychopharmacology. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Neuroscience Education Institute and EMA Wellness. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Jon E. Grant, JD, MD, MPH, is the Ellen C. Manning Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago and co-editor-in-chief of CNS Spectrums. His clinical and research work focuses on the neurobiology and treatment of addictive, impulsive, and compulsive disorders, including trichotillomania and skin-picking disorder. Andrew J. • E292 - Re-release: Wired for Creativity? The Bipolar-Genius Connection with Dr. Tiffany Greenwood
    Oct 7 2026
Originally released in 2022, this episode of The PsychopharmaStahlogy Show features Drs. Andrew Cutler and Stephen Stahl in conversation with Dr. Tiffany Greenwood on the genetic and trait-based links between bipolar disorder and creativity. They explore how temperament, personality, and cognitive style may occupy the space between madness and genius, the role of dopamine, evolutionary explanations for why bipolar risk persists, and why stabilizing mood doesn't have to mean losing creativity. Tiffany A. Greenwood, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego. Her research uses dimensional traits to refine the genetic signal in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, through collaborations including the Bipolar Genome Study, the Consortium on the Genetics of Schizophrenia, and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. She also studies bipolar disorder as an extreme of normal variation in temperament, personality, cognition, and creativity. Stephen M. Stahl, MD, PhD, DSc (Hon.), is a psychiatrist, psychopharmacologist, and internationally recognized educator in clinical neuroscience and psychopharmacology. He is the author of widely used educational resources, including Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and Stahl's Prescriber's Guide, and his work focuses on translating complex neurobiology and treatment mechanisms into practical clinical concepts for mental health clinicians.
