  • TT106: Who's Out There
    Nov 2 2026

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.

I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.

Today’s featured release is Who’s Out There by Westley Smith

Who’s Out There is a horror / thriller. The rangers of Pennsyvlania’s Marburg State Park suffered the loss of their leader last July during a rescue mission in the rain and wind of a hurricane. Now it’s late January and Colt Mitcham and his team have a sense of déjà vu. This time, it’s a blizzard knocking out communications. And that’s just the start of the problems because “Douggie Carver’s gone a-hunting” once again.

Bottom line: Who’s Out There is for you if you like stories riding on dread and where survival is a big fat question mark.

Who’s Out There is listed as a thriller but in my opinion it checks more boxes as a horror. It is the classic case of a small group of people cut off from the rest of the world, up against something they don’t realize, and dropping like flies. There’s a lot here for both genre lovers to enjoy but I give the edge to horror.

Who’s Out There has a 11-member cast. Ranger Colt Mitcham stars in the hero role with Ranger Josephine “Joey” Walsh as his confidant and lover. The other rangers—Amos, Flint, Tripp, Wyatt, Dusty, Porter, and Norm—work throughout the park. Darryl Schoff formerly owned land taken by the state to add to the park. He and his son Rumor may have lost the legal battle but are still waging the war. With a large cast, it was challenging to keep the characters straight but it did become easier as the story went on.

The logic of the story works in the context of horror where you have to accept the motivation as it comes and not try to fit it into the sense of the “real world.” The action scenes were abundant and shock-and-awe elements were shocking and awing making excellent use of many favorite horror tropes.

I read Who’s Out There in two sittings and found it to be a page turner. My copy did have several typos and non-standard formatting that I learned to ignore in favor of the story. I highly recommended it for horror lovers as well as thriller lovers who favor physical danger and action over psychological.

Who’s Out There was released from Manta Press and is promoted by Partners In Crime Tours. Visit the tour page for added content and links to digital retailers.

  • TT105: Wired for Magic

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.

I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.

Today’s featured release is Wired for Magic by Janet Roberts

Wired for Magic is paranormal suspense. Rowan Campbell was once a sought after model; now she lives behind the camera and out of the eye of a stalker who wants to possess her. Though from a line of endowed magical women, she has turned her back on her heritage, wanting only to live a normal life. But there is no “normal” when living on the run and to change that … is to change everything.

Bottom line: Wired for Magic is for you if you like cat-and-mouse suspense fueled by ancient bewitchery.

Wired for Magic is an origin story. Like all good up-and-coming heroes, Rowan Campbell has baggage. If she’s going to live up to her potential, she needs to get out of her own way while she is dodging a stalker who doesn’t was to kill her but possess her.

Rowan Campbell is a reluctant hero of her own story, which makes for an interesting read. All she wants to be is normal and it’s the last thing she or her life is. Jarrod Marrone is a really good bad guy – every time he’s on the page I totally hated him. Greedy, afraid, over-inflated ego, all with too much money and no moral compass. Griff, Rowan’s brother, is the resourceful supportive sibling every hero needs and one that balances her well.

Overall, the logic of the story holds up. The plot is a linear and the characters stay true to their nature. It is a cat-and-mouse as Jarrod chases and Rowan zigs and zags, each forcing the other to adjust course.

Overall, I enjoyed the mix of suspense and magic. It is well balanced with neither being overly dominant. I’m not normally a stalker story fan but having Jarrod’s goal be to possess / marry / have Rowan rather than kill her and him being an active storyteller amped up the tension.

Wired for Magic is promoted by Partners In Crime Tours. Visit the tour page for added content and links to digital retailers.

The Case of the Vanishing Budget.

A small, plucky podcast called Mysteries to Die For awoke one morning to find its resources mysteriously drained. The lights flickered. The software groaned. The authors—real, living humans—were spotted wandering the halls whispering, “We… need… co-ax cables…”

Jack and TG searched for clues. Was it sabotage? A ghost? A raccoon with a grudge?

No. The culprit was far more chilling.

Ads. Ads were creeping toward the show like a slow moving fog, threatening to interrupt every dramatic pause with a cheerful voice saying, “Have YOU tried our new probiotic toothpaste?”

To stop this horror, the hosts devised a plan—three tiers of membership, each more heroic than the last.

    • The Free Tier aka The Grave Digger’s Society: For listeners who love the show but also love keeping their wallets sealed tighter than a mummy’s tomb.

    • The Cadaver Collective: For those willing to part with a few dollars to keep the mysteries flowing and the authors funded.

    • The Preservationist Society: For the brave souls who want to say, “Yes, I support whodunnit storytelling across all genres,” with the confidence of a detective revealing the killer in the big reveal.

And for those who fear commitment? A tip jar—where you can drop a coin and leave a pun so terrible it becomes its own unsolved crime.

The solution to the mystery was simple: Memberships save the show. They keep the power on, the software humming, and the ads banished to whatever dark dimension they came from.

The final clue? The links—hidden in plain sight—waiting in the show notes and at M2D4podcast.com.

Will you solve the mystery… or become part of it?

    ABOUT H.A. Ripley

Harold Austin “Rip” Ripley (1896–1974) was a newspaper columnist for the Chicago Tribune who wrote a daily column called "Minute Mysteries" featuring Professor Fordney. The series found its way into more than 100 newspapers. In 1932, he released a book of his Detectograms. Ripley also created Photo Crime for Look magazine, inviting readers to solve cases from photographic clues. He was a recovering alcoholic and later in life, founded Guest House treatment centers and helped thousands of alcoholic priests. Austin Ripley slowly began to lose his eyesight and went completely blind two years before his death. He died at home in his cabin he built on Tainter Lake on April 11, 1974.

It’s another conundrum and Henri suspects everyone. Let’s see if we can help him bring this case to a close and get him that macchiato he’s been Jonesing for. Here’s Henri’s “do not trust” list, in the order we met them:

    • Mayor Tom Vaughn, Politian, ‘nuff said

    • Assistant Chief Rorschach, the man uses spit to fix his hair

    • Janet from IT, crushing on the ink stain

    • Judith the Comptroller, the money lady

    • John Smith, almost forgot him

    Memberships

Alright, before we dive back into the Henri’s craziness, we gotta talk memberships. We’ve got three tiers now — the Grave Digger’s Union, which is free because apparently we’re philanthropists… or bad at business.

Then there’s the Cadaver Collective — four bucks a month. That’s literally the price of a gas station coffee that tastes like sadness and burnt hopes.

And if you’re feeling fancy, we’ve got the Preservationist Society at eight bucks. That’s the tier for people who want to say, ‘Yes, I support delusion storytellers who got their hands on a pair of microphone.

Your membership keeps our real human authors fed, our software from becoming self aware, and the ads from clawing their way into the show.

  • TT103: Dying with a Secret by Tj O'Connor
    Sep 21 2026

Dying with a Secret is paranormal cozy mystery. Oliver “Tuck” Tucker is a detective. Before his death, he was the cop kind; after death, he’s the pro-bono PI kind of investigator. When an ordinary day at the office for his wife turns into Men in Black meets A Night at the Museum, normal flies out the window. Things aren’t helped along by Tuck’s great-times-four grandmother, Sally, who brings secrets of her own into the quagmire.

Bottom line: Dying with a Secret is for you if you like fast-paced, light-hearted adventures with an aura of the extraordinary.

The reason to pick up and stay with this series is the premise. Tuck is dead, but not gone, and all the instincts of the police detective came back with him. The world O’Connor has built is simply fun with the humorous life-and-death gags and snarky comments that had me chuckling page after page.

O’Connor has brought his mastery of thriller pacing to the cozy genre. With DYING WITH A SECRET, I found it to be more of an adventure than a mystery—though there certainly is a body that kicks it all off—because the story shifts from a whodunnit to a hunt and that shift drives the pacing.

Tuck is a likable hero both because he’s competent and funny but also because he doesn’t lament being dead. Like all great detectives, he has his “team” who act as his liaison to the living world and also his subject matter experts. His wife Angela and partner Bear provide balance to Tuck’s world and the story.

Dying with a Secret is a complex story and as I’ve thought about how the ending I find I have a few questions. I’m sure I’ll continue to think about the story for days to come and get there.

Overall, I enjoyed Tuck’s latest adventure. This is book 4 of the series, I have read books 1 and 4. I do recommend reading Book 1—Tuck’s origin story—for an introduction to the world, characters, and what Tuck can and cannot do.
