  • Steve Wynn: The Man Who Reinvented Las Vegas
    Sep 24 2026

Steve Wynn didn’t just build casinos. He helped redefine what Las Vegas could be.

In this episode of the Murphree Investment Group podcast, we trace Wynn’s rise from a Maryland bingo parlor to the Golden Nugget, The Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas, and Macau.

We also examine one of the most important financial relationships behind that transformation: Wynn’s partnership with Michael Milken and Drexel Burnham Lambert. High-yield financing helped provide the capital needed to build The Mirage, a roughly $630 million bet that helped prove the modern megaresort could work at scale.

It’s a story about entrepreneurship, leverage, capital allocation, risk, and the way financial innovation can reshape an entire industry and, in this case, an entire skyline.

  • Sam Bankman-Fried: The Rise and Collapse of FTX
    Sep 17 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

In November 2022, FTX was one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, was a billionaire, a major political donor, and one of the most recognizable figures in crypto. The company had been valued at $32 billion.

    Within days, it was bankrupt.

In this episode of the Murphree Investment Group podcast, we trace the story of Sam Bankman-Fried from his early days at Jane Street to the creation of Alameda Research and the rapid rise of FTX. We examine how FTX became one of the most prominent names in cryptocurrency, what was happening behind the scenes as billions of dollars in customer funds flowed to Alameda, and how a balance-sheet revelation ultimately triggered a run on the exchange that brought the entire empire crashing down in a matter of days.

But the story did not end with FTX's bankruptcy. We follow the criminal case against Bankman-Fried, his conviction and 25-year prison sentence, his unsuccessful appeal, and the remarkable effort to recover billions of dollars for FTX customers and creditors.

It is a story of ambition, fraud, reputation, and the extraordinary collapse of a $32 billion financial empire.

  • Leopold Aschenbrenner: The Rise and Fall of Situational Awareness
    Sep 10 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

At just 25 years old, former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner turned a provocative thesis about the future of artificial intelligence into one of Wall Street’s most extraordinary investment stories.

His hedge fund, Situational Awareness, grew from roughly $225 million in seed capital to as much as $45 billion as concentrated bets on semiconductors, energy, data centers, and AI infrastructure produced staggering returns. Then, in a matter of weeks, the trade unraveled. A violent technology selloff, losing short positions, extreme leverage, and margin calls helped erase roughly $35 billion in assets and forced the fund to liquidate much of its public portfolio.

In this episode, we examine Aschenbrenner’s remarkable rise, the investment thesis behind Situational Awareness, the leverage that amplified both its success and its collapse, and one of the oldest lessons in financial markets: being right about the future means very little if you can’t survive the present.
