Halloween is about a lot more than candy, costumes, decorations, and scary movies. In Shortcast #025, How You Doin’ Halloween, we explore the deeper—and slightly stranger—side of one of our favorite celebrations.

We look back at Halloween’s roots in ancient Celtic festivals, All Souls’ Day, and All Saints’ Day, when this time of year was connected to the harvest, death and rebirth, honoring those who came before us, and the belief that the veil between the living and the dead might be a little thinner.

Maybe that’s part of why Halloween still fascinates us. It gives us a chance to remember people we’ve lost, think about life and what might come next, and explore our fascination with ghosts, spirits, legends, and the unknown.

Of course, modern Halloween has become its own energy-filled experience. Scary movies, books, costumes, haunted stories, and that little adrenaline rush of being frightened all give us permission to escape everyday life for a while. Costumes even let us step outside ourselves and become somebody—or something—completely different.

We’ll also share some personal Halloween memories and explore a Make Peace With Life perspective on ghosts: What if they aren’t something to fear? What if they’re simply misunderstood energy?
