Does it feel like every part of your life is divided? Every scenario? Every environment? Your church, your school, your work, your friends. Left, right. Conservative, liberal. Religious, secular. From parenting styles to school choice, denominational choice to governing preference, it seems you're always being asked to take a side.

This is a conversation between a progressive Christian and a conservative atheist who happen to be great friends. Welcome to Living on Common Ground.

What would you want your body to become after you die: ashes, a grave, or something that keeps feeding the living? We dig into a surprising end-of-life planning option that’s gaining ground in the US: human composting, also known as natural organic reduction. From there, we chase one weirdly heartfelt idea all the way down a rabbit hole of wills, funeral choices, and what it would mean to turn your remains into soil for a tree your family visits every year.

We talk through the real-world side of it too: where a memorial tree could even be planted, what it means to live in a society that moves constantly, and how cemetery rules and property laws shape our options. Along the way we swap stories about hidden family graveyards inside suburban developments, historic burial grounds, and why places like St. Augustine make death feel less abstract and more tied to history and community.

Then the conversation takes a turn into the deeper question underneath all of it: ritual. A simple tradition can start as one person’s wish and end up looking a lot like religion a few generations later. We connect compost, legacy, and memory to communion and the Eucharist, and we challenge the modern instinct to shrug and say symbols are “just symbols.” If you’ve ever wrestled with spirituality, faith, atheism, or what makes a life meaningful, this one will stay with you.

A stranger yelling in traffic shouldn’t matter, yet it can light up something primal in us. We start there and follow the thread all the way into the bigger problem: a divided culture where anger feels not only normal, but expected. As a progressive Christian and a conservative atheist who are still close friends, we talk through what it takes to stay grounded when everything around you pushes you to pick a team and punish the other side.

We dig into the idea of “swallowing it” as a kind of everyday stoicism and why that habit can create social order even when it feels unfair. Then we zoom out to class and status: how different socioeconomic worlds teach different rules about respect, how friend groups become feedback loops, and why so many of us assume our perspective is simply the correct one. We also wrestle with the way privilege language shows up in modern life, including the temptation of self denunciation as a way to signal you’re not one of the bad people.

From there, we explore comfort and the baseline effect: once a need is solved, it stops producing joy and becomes an expectation we only notice when it disappears. That connects to comparison culture, advertising driven discontent, resentment aimed both upward and downward, and the haunting question that never goes away: how much is enough? If you’ve ever felt your temper flare over something small, or caught yourself measuring your life against someone else’s, you’ll hear yourself in this conversation.

  • Peter or Paul

Everything feels like it comes with a team jersey now, even your faith, your politics, and your friendships. We start there because we’re tired of a world that demands you pick a side and stay there, and we’re trying to practice something harder: a real conversation between a progressive Christian and a conservative atheist who actually respect each other.

That friendship sets up a big question from early church history and Christian theology: Jesus names Peter as the rock, yet Western Christianity often sounds like Paul wrote the operating system. We walk through why Pauline theology “wins” in practice, how Acts and Paul’s letters tell different kinds of truth, and what the New Testament being written in Koine Greek (with Aramaic mostly in quotes) reveals about audience, power, and reach. If you’ve ever wondered why some doctrines feel so central now, and yet hard to locate cleanly in the earliest layers, we dig into what changed and when.

From Jerusalem’s fall in 70 CE to traditions about Peter in Rome, we trace how geography and empire shape belief. We talk Gentile inclusion, Torah observance, and why “religion” itself can be an anachronistic label for the ancient world, where gods, culture, and identity are inseparable. We also explore how Christianity moves from fringe to favored, what Constantine actually does (and doesn’t) do, and why institutions tend to adopt the theologies that travel best through bureaucracy.

If you care about Bible scholarship, early Christianity, Paul vs Peter, or just how to stay human with people who disagree with you, come hang out with us. Subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review with the question you want us to tackle next.
