In this episode, we talk about the above-average risk of suicidality in the legal profession, as well as what warning signs should be looked out for, and what steps you can take if someone you know might be at risk for suicide.

Today's guest is Bridgette Carr, a clinical professor at the University of Michigan Law School. Bridgette is the founder and director of the Human Trafficking Clinic. She also teaches a course about Designing a Fulfilling Life in Law, which teaches skills related to attorney well-being. She co-teaches that course with Vivek Sankaran, another clinical professor of law at the University of Michigan. Unfortunately, Vivek couldn't join us today because of COVID, but we wish him a speedy recovery.

While we talk a lot about mental health for legal professionals, it is also important to note what it looks like if you are a legal professional supporting someone with mental illness, so we are excited to welcome both Nikki and Haran to the program.

This week we start with a quick mention of an article from the current NYS Bar President about how the practice of law doesn't always line up well when we encounter clients with mental health issues. This leads us perfectly into a conversation with Kane County (IL) State's Attorney Jaime Mosser, and Dr. Jennifer Peacock, who are here to talk about the collaborative diversion program to keep low-level offenses out of jail, and in cases where mental health or substance abuse are involved, get them the treatment they need instead of the incarceration that they don't.
