  • “I would not have had the guts to come out and stay out if it wasn’t for my roller derby team” - Chase talks about coming out as a lesbian aged 34
    Jun 29 2026

Chase Rodriguez is a fitness instructor, mum and roller derby skater. Growing up in a religious family, she believed her attraction to women was sinful. Chase married and had children but later came out during her divorce proceedings.
Chase was drawn to the roller derby community after seeing the film Whip It! She loves how the sport helps her physical and mental health. Being part of a team with other LGBTQIA+ members helped her embrace her true self and find her tribe. Chase talks about queer sports, Pride and how coming out feels like coming home.
Joining the LGBTQ+ community later in life can feel daunting. Chase suggests seeking out queer sports groups, from spectator communities to teams. You can find out more about UK roller derby from the WFTDA and Five Nations Roller Derby.Late in the Gay is a Substack, podcast and community for LGBTQ+ people who came out later in life created by journalist, podcaster and dog mom Yvette Caster.

  • "Life on his own terms": Mr Brake Down talks about coming out as a trans man aged 34
    Jun 15 2026

Mr Brake Down is a drag king, actor, singer and the founder of The Upside Down Cabaret. Joining a LGBTQ+ choir helped him become the man he was born to be. Brake talks about the drag community, poking fun at masculinity and patriarchy, and how trans people are getting on with their lives joyfully.

Joining the LGBTQ+ community later in life can feel daunting. Brake suggests looking for LGBTQ+ spaces, whether that’s a book group, a choir or a cabaret night. He also loves transgender charities Mermaids, Sparkle, Not A Phase and Trans Without Abuse, especially the work of Debbie Cannon, and the work of non-for-profit The Good Law Project.
