    • 6. Stem Cell Transplant: A Patient's View
      Jan 16 2021

For the benefit of other patients, Glenn Campbell describes his Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in June 2020. This hour-long episode is intended mainly for people with blood cancers who may potentially go through this procedure. A Stem Cell Transplant (also known as a Bone Marrow Transplant) is generally reserved for patients with blood cancers who need more than traditional chemotherapy. Just before a Stem Cell Transplant, the patient is subjected to an extraordinarily high dose of chemotherapy which hopefully kills the cancer but also wipes out the patient's bone marrow, where all blood cells are made. The core "transplant" consists of a single blood transfusion which gives their own bone marrow cells back to them (or the bone marrow cells of a donor). Glenn describes the whole process from his own personal viewpoint as a patient at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Not only did Glenn tolerate the procedure well; he also reports "having a blast!" and "enjoying the whole process". ⸻ Originally published on 14 Jan 2020 — For related notes, corrections and links, see the YouTube version at j.mp/kc_stemcell

    • 5. The Tyranny of ideology: Why Free-Speech Has Its Limits
      Jan 15 2021

Inspired by Donald Trump's Twitter Ban and the controversy surrounding it, Glenn Campbell reveals his Tweet of the Day: "There is no ideology that won't eventually lead to tyranny." This includes any "free speech" ideology. After Trump and many of his supporters were de-platformed for inciting violence, many free-speech advocates were dismayed, citing the "dangerous precedent" it sets. Glenn argues that free speech cannot be absolute. Every ideology, when practiced in the real world, eventually yields unexpected bad effects and has to be reigned in. Free speech works for intelligence people who can evaluate information independently, but it can be dangerous for those who are driven more by tribe loyalty than objective truth. ⸻ Originally published on 13 Jan 2020 — For related notes, corrections and links, see the YouTube version at j.mp/kc_tyranny

    • 4. Africa: A Superficial Travel Guide
      Jan 14 2021

Glenn Campbell visited Africa five times between 2010 and 2017, for a total of 7 weeks. This hardly qualifies him as an expert, but if it is more time than you have spent in Africa, he's got some advice. First point: "Don't visit Africa." Africa is not for amateurs. The main issues are crime and health. Although he found his Africa experiences valuable, he doesn't expect to return. In this unscripted 1½-hour episode, Glenn describes the 11 African countries he visited and his impressions of each. Highlights include the wildlife of Kruger National Park, the penguins near Capetown and the deserts of Namibia. Low points include troubles at the border and being extorted by police officers. The most valuable part of experience was learning about poverty and the many tragedies of the continent. ⸻ Originally published on 9 Jan 2020 — For related notes, corrections and links, see the YouTube version at j.mp/kc_africa
