  • Rulebook to Help Moms of Sons Navigate the Transition to Mother-in-Law
    Apr 29 2026

You’ve heard of a Bridezilla, but are YOU a Monster-in-Law?..

… Here’s a 911 Rulebook to Help Moms of Sons

Navigate the Extraordinary Transition to Mother-in-Law!

Acclaimed NYC Psychotherapist Offers a Fun Yet Functional Must-Have For This

    Notoriously Intense Relationship

It’s routinely the butt of jokes and reduced to caricatures of overbearing, meddling monsters. Yet in reality, stepping into the role of mother-in-law is daunting and rife with emotional landmines. Sadly, mothers-in-law have been largely left to struggle and blunder alone—until now.

In How to Be the “Perfect” Mother-in-Law: A Lighthearted Guide for Moms of Married Sons (Amazon, ISBN: 979-8-9930332-0-4; $9.99; Original Trade Paperback), acclaimed psychotherapist and author, Lesley Koeppel, LCSW, has written a book to help every MIL (mother-in-law) find her footing and establish the foundation for a strong, supportive, and lasting bond with her DIL (daughter-in-law). As both a psychotherapist and the mother of two recently married sons, the author brings some much-needed perspective to the naturally complicated MIL/DIL dynamic. “This book is not about blame,” Lesley stresses. “It’s about insight. It’s about empathy. And most of all, it’s about possibility.”

Grounded in psychological wisdom and real-life experience, How to Be the “Perfect” Mother-in-Law offers practical guidance on walking that fine line between being involved in your son’s and his wife’s lives and letting go, providing support while giving them space and privacy. While keeping the tone light and humorous—each chapter opens with a cartoon—Lesley urges every MIL to be honest about her feelings and behaviors toward her DIL, reinforcing this with self-reflection questions. By the end of the book, every mom of a son who is dating, engaged or married will have not only a deeper awareness of her role and meaningful contributions as a MIL but also a toolbox filled with practical strategies—ranging from effective communication techniques to healthy boundary-setting. As a result, she’ll be equipped to handle even the most delicate moments with confidence and grace while fostering a relationship with her DIL that is steady, considerate, and yes, even joyful.

Among key principles for all mothers-in-law to take to heart, Lesley Koeppel discusses:

    • Grief: As a MIL, you must fully grieve the loss of your son in the way you knew him during his childhood—he is not your little boy anymore. Letting yourself be sad is essential to letting go.

    • Acceptance: When your son gets engaged, accept his bride-to-be without judgment or criticism. Then, to maintain your relationship with him, focus on building a positive relationship with her.

    • The natural order of priorities: Never make your son choose between you and his wife. If you do, you will lose (in more ways than one). Instead, adapt and support your son’s new primary relationship by fostering their independence and respecting their privacy.

    • Embrace the long view: In interactions with your DIL, learn to hold your tongue. If you get off to a rocky start, acknowledge your mistakes, apologize, and reset. By treating your DIL with respect and kindness, you’ll ensure having a close, loving relationship with your future grandkids.
