If you’ve ever worked in a shelter environment, you’d be well accustomed to treating very emaciated animals and having to place them on a treatment plan to avoid a so-called refeeding syndrome. This is a collection of metabolic changes and fluid and electrolyte redistribution that occurs following prolonged starvation or severe malnutrition. While rare in general practice, it is important to know how to prevent and treat it as it can be life-threatening. In this episode, we’ll review a collection of case studies to determine what the signs are, how to diagnose this condition and how to treat it.
