    Deep in the state of Guanajuato sits Santa Cruz de Juventino Rosas — a quiet farming town with a reputation that has outlived almost everyone who earned it. For generations it was known across Mexico as la tierra de brujos, the land of witches: a place of healers and hexes, of curanderas who could pull sickness from a body and brujos who could put something far worse back in. On its outskirts lies the Cementerio de Almas, the Cemetery of Souls — not a graveyard for the dead, but ground where sorcerers buried their trabajos, their spell-work, to bind a lover, win a fortune, or ruin an enemy. They say the trees there move on their own. They say the stones fly. And they say some things you bury are not the same as things that are gone. When Lucía Fonseca returns to bury her grandmother's memory and sell an empty house, she learns that some debts in this town were never meant to be paid by the living.
