What if the way we talk about Palestine is part of the problem?
“Conflict.” “War.” “It’s complicated.”
Omar Baddar thinks we need to rethink all three.
In this episode of Arab Is Me, Said Durrah sits down with Palestinian-American political analyst and activist Omar Baddar for a candid conversation about Palestine, media, advocacy, political power—and the words we use to describe what Palestinians are experiencing.
Omar has made a name for himself walking into some of the toughest media debates on Palestine, often entering conversations where he knows the framing may already be working against him. He takes us behind the scenes of those appearances: how he prepares, how he handles an ambush, why he sometimes ignores the question being asked, and how he makes his point when television gives him only seconds to do it.
Then Said puts Omar through a different kind of test.
Conflict. Complicated. War.
One by one, Omar breaks down why he believes these commonly used words can distort the reality of Palestine—and what advocates should understand about communicating an issue that is so often framed before they even enter the conversation.
But this episode goes well beyond the media.
Said and Omar get into some of the harder conversations happening inside our own communities: Who should speak for Palestinians? Do Palestinian voices need to lead every conversation about Palestine? What about powerful allies like Mehdi Hasan? Are political “purity tests” hurting the movement? Can you accept support from someone you fundamentally disagree with without compromising what you believe?
Omar also explains why he believes the American conversation around Palestine really is changing, what gives him hope, how activists can avoid burning themselves out, and what someone without a microphone, television platform, or huge social-media following can start doing right now.
And before Omar escapes, he has to survive Al-Bab—where we get his thoughts on Edward Said, Fairuz, Bill Maher, Sam Harris, hummus as a meal, knafeh preferences, and the Arab historical figure he'd choose for one unforgettable conversation.
This episode isn't simply about what you believe about Palestine.
It's about how we talk about Palestine, who gets heard—and whether the conversation itself is finally changing.
