The text is an excerpt from the introduction and appendix to a translation of the Platonic dialogue Alcibiades I, translated by Benjamin Jowett. The appendix provides a thorough discussion of the debate over the authenticity of Plato's works, focusing on the criteria for determining which dialogues are genuine and which are spurious. The introduction then summarizes the contents of Alcibiades I, which is a conversation between Socrates and Alcibiades on the subject of self-knowledge and virtue, and its relevance to Alcibiades’s ambition to be a political leader.
