Description

A not-quite epic science fiction adventure about a down-on-his luck galactic pilot caught in a cross-galaxy struggle for survival!

Space travel just isn't what it used to be. With the invention of quantum teleportation, space heroes aren't needed anymore. When one particularly unlucky ex-adventurer masquerades as famous pilot and hate figure Jacques McKeown, he's sucked into an ever-deepening corporate and political intrigue. Between space pirates, adorable deadly creatures, and a missing fortune in royalties, saving the universe was never this difficult!

From the creator of Mogworld and Jam! Benjamin Richard "Yahtzee" Croshaw is a British Australian comedic writer, video game journalist, author, and video game developer. He is perhaps best known for his acerbic video game review series, Zero Punctuation, for The Escapist

Great book, great narrator

Loved the voice of the narrator. The story was great too, and doesn't drag on.

Fantastic!

Would you listen to Will Save the Galaxy for Food again? Why?

I almost never re-listen to fiction, but I can see myself doing it in a year or two.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Will Save the Galaxy for Food?

Despite its claim of only being a "satirical sci-fi adventure", there were actually quite a few plot twists; I don't want to spoil anything, but there were a few "woah wait what?" moments.

Which character – as performed by Yahtzee Croshaw – was your favorite?

Ms. Warden

Any additional comments?

I wasn't sure what to expect with this, but decided to give it a shot. It was _thoroughly_ enjoyable. Really sad that I'm done with it! I'll have to check out some other Yahtzee works.

Great

A solid science fiction novel from Yahtzee Croshaw. WSTGFF is a tongue-in-cheek comedy with enough seriousness to give it compelling tension as well.

The novel is written from the perspective of a down-on-his-luck star pilot who gets unwillingly drawn into big events. Although the protagonist initially comes across as a clumsy oaf who only cares about himself, it turns out he is mostly very competent and genuinely cares about helping others. This is a refreshing change of pace compared to the bumbling idiot archetype that is used far too often in modern comedy. This is more the story about a former hero, nearly dried up after the end of the good old days, who gets unexpectedly thrown into a new adventure.

While much of Croshaw's humor is low-brow, it is usually clever and well-executed, and many parts of the book had me laughing out loud. He mixes situational humor, irony, amusing character flaws, humorous non-sequiters, and other forms of humor to keep the laughs fresh and varied.

My only complaint would be the rather weak ending, which throws in a last few unanswered questions before going out on a whimper. There are solid narrative reasons for this, and it serves to make a point, but it still disappointed me; I suspect Croshaw would call me an idiotic sheep who only knows how to appreciate a story when he is spoon-fed a conventional ending, but I just wish he'd ended the story on some trope-defying comedic note.

An achievement to say the very least!

Will Save the Galaxy for Food has filled a void I felt could only be filled by great science fiction works such as those of Douglas Adams. The humor is on point and is tied in with the writing seamlessly. The characters and plot have immense depth and immersion. And Yahtzee's voice is just perfect. I can certainly recommend this book to an audience which has the gift of hearing and 1 or more fingers or finger-like appendages.

Master of Satire

I love how this novel simultaneously honors and destroys every sci-fi trope in existence. I've loved listening to Crowshaw ever since he started reviewing video games and his witty brand of satire translate well into novel form. Yahtzee's drunk voice makes the book worth a credit all by itself in my opinion.

Light hearted adventure with a comedian twist

THE BAD
There's nothing really bad about this one, in reality. The worst thing I can think of is that maybe at some points the story dragged a bit and it wasn't nails stuck to armchair gripping. it was just ok every now and then

THE GOOD
Well there ar eplenty to list here. Characters, for one. With few exceptions, the characters are not particularly stellar but are very well defined in what they are and bring their own touch of entertainment and jokes to the story. The voice acting for them, although I'm the kind of listener who enjoys narrators distinctly separating men and women and this one didn't, was very good. You could tell who was speaking the majority of the time, and even despite the forced stereotypical characters voices be also forced, I believe that was the intention to make it funnier (which it did most of the time). The story is ok with nothing special or really extra captivating about it... seems like a simple backdrop serving as secondary character for the only purpose of providing the characters to delve into funny(er) situations. That being said, I think the ending was very realistic (or as much as one could be in this book) and at the same time particularly satisfying

THE VERDICT
After coming from a series of books that took themselves too seriously (some that had enough to sustain it and others not so much), this was excruciatingly refreshing. It provided a very much welcome escape while serving as sci-fi read along the way. Beware though that if you're not used to this kind of genre mix (it was my first such book), it might take you a while to get into it. My advice would be just to let go of any story expectations (which doesn't mean the story is bad, not at all) and try to savor all the small sharp wit conversations, which are plenty, because that is where the real gold lies within this story

fun and funny

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book and recommend it. It is funny, and although I was highly skeptical of any book performed by its author – he did well. The book is in a lot of ways a comedy of errors, and is not difficult for the reader to see a wide number of these problems coming, but they are of course invisible to the protagonist until they slam him hard.
He takes it on the chin, and keep going despite it all… And of course triumphs in the end.
But then you knew that.
I think this is a nice introduction to this author's work and I'll certainly look for more from him.

Yahtzee has done it again, still unsure what "it" was but I liked it.

Yahtzee has done a few books and I have liked his previous work. I felt no fear in burning a credit to get this latest work.

There are many tropes and plot device ruts along the roads of sci-fi and fantasy. Yahtzee has blown the shocks out of the listeners ride but you learn to enjoy the spine compressions and bitten tongues as you jounce and shudder along the narrative.

I sense the author/narrator does not consider this a serious genre defining book allowing him to reveal how others in the field may take themselves too seriously.

I will continue to keep my eyes open for Yahtzee to pull up alongside me on a narrative backroad promising a wild ride sure to require a seatbelt and I will definitely ride shotgun again.

Buying the hardcopy to add to my collection

An excellent book from the first 5 minutes. An exciting sci-fi thriller, with a unique comedic twist. The golden age of star piloting has come and gone and the main character, (who ever the hell he is) is left wading through the metaphorical gutter for spare change. Along with his many other “protagonist hero types” chiseled jaws and all, are left to waste away thanks to new technological advances rendering them obsolete. With a half loaded blaster, dumb hero luck, zero foresight and an adherence to an antiquated code of honor, our hero finds him self in a hilarious, “on the edge of your seat,” forehead slapping, adventure that’ll leave you with your fingers crossed for a “plying” sequel. Oh “TRACK!” I forgot about that “plying” cooling rod again!

a true master of simile

it doesn't take much to make a world feel alive, but the author here uses very little to make the book and the characters feel not only alive, but also vibrant.

I have not laughed this hard to a book in years.

Traffic hazard! Do not listen to while driving.

A few weeks ago, the almighty overlord that is amazon´s AI broke into my subconscious, and suggested a new drug to me - in the form of the Audiobook “Differently Morphous” written and read by some guy dubiously named after a dice game.
Being German, I had never heard of this guy, and promptly ran into the trap – meaning that I was instantly hooked. Since I was never one who could go cold turkey (I am vegetarian) I had to check out Audible again, and found “Will Save Galaxy...”. I was really curious to see whether this one could keep up keep with the first book by him that I heard.

Oh yes, it could.

It may not be the most novel setting, but it is exactly the constant bombardment with SciFi clichees and clever story twists that make this book so funny, and the dry sense of humor had me pull over the car more than once in the middle of traffic, just to release a sudden burst of laughter (Warning: do not listen to this book while performing surgery).
Die-hard worshippers of the Almighty Douglas Adams may forgive me, but in my humble opinion Mr. Croshaw is one of his worthiest disciples, if not his successor.

Even more, any audiobook vitally depends on a good reader, and I had several otherwise excellent books which I could not bear to finish since the reader – often the author himself – had about the voice-acting capability and sense of pointed narration (if that´s an expression? ...Kraut alert!) as a text-reader app with built-in deceptive speech disfluency, or since my German-trained ear could not comprehend a single word that Mr.Jan Kee from Mumble Creek, Texas, so enthusiastically declaimed.
Mr. Croshaw´s reading is up there with my favourites, such as Jim Dale, and fits his books perfectly (at least for 2 out of the 2 sampled so far).
And I am astonished to read the reviews here saying that some of his other books – which I have not read/heard yet – should be even better.
Needless to say that I will get all of the others as well, but also needless to say that I will not read a single one of them.
I will leave that to Mr. Croshaw, and just listen.

P.S.: And I just read that he also does reviews on as videogames as well. Must check it out. Now if he also starts to do reviews on board games, I will think about divorcing my wife.

fun, fast-paced and suspenseful story

Was hat Ihnen das Hörerlebnis von Will Save the Galaxy for Food besonders unterhaltsam gemacht?

This is my first book by the author, bought because the title caught my eye and the audio sample quickly hooked me.

The author does an amazing job at throwing me right into the story, set into a strange, fascinating world peopled with characters which hit a good mix between odd and relatable. Especially the two mains draw me in quickly, for being flawed, certainly not in control of events but, when push comes to shove, capable and tough as nails.

Add to that: read by the author himself, which is always great because it means the characters and the story telling sound just like they were meant to sound. Mr Croshaw may not be a trained speaker, but he certainly is an experienced one and frankly, I've heard audio books read by professionals who were simply over-doing it to the point where it felt that showing off how amazingly good they are was at least as important as the book they were reading.

Was mochten Sie an der Handlung am liebsten?

The plot moves quickly and without being predictable, and it's peppered with events or objects which slowly build the world the story is set in. So you never get a huge info dump to explain the world to you, you just learn important bits and pieces as you follow the mains as they either catch or dodge whatever nasty surprises the plot throws at them.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

Maybe this book was suggested to you (as to me) while browsing Douglas Adams or books with a similar mix of comic and scifi. It does have parellels to Douglas Adams, like being laugh-out-loud funny, wildly imaginative, throwing the reader right into events and having non-heroic heroes. But by no stretch is it a rip-off of Douglas Adams. Give the audio sample a try and see for yourself :)

Get the audible version!

It is voiced by the author himself and brings across the humor magnificently.
It gets a tiny bit draggy at one point, but except that it's probably the best and most original story I have had the pleasure of listening to in a long long time!

I don't want to spoil anything but I can tell you that it was one hell of a ride and that all the characters are extremely likable from the get go.

Very entertaining indeed.

Highly amusing overall and very enjoyable. I had not heard of the author up until now, but intend to dig up any other works he may have composed right after I've finished typing this.

The most fun book I've listened to in a long time

I only got Audible reluctantly because I needed something to distract me while I sit on the dreaded one hour train to my university, but this book made me look forward to immersing myself for another hour in the fun world Yahtzee conveys so effortlessly. An interesting new take on space adventures, witty characters and a plot that just constantly puts a smile on my face makes this book truly unique. Good stuff Yahtzee. Good stuff.

He did it again

If you know and love zero punctuation and Mogworld and Jam, you are in for a treat.
The story is an interesting take on sci fi and a spoof of everything vom Firefly to Star Trek.
Most of the Characters are well written and the quality of Yahtzees voice acting is as good as in the previous books
