Description
In her groundbreaking new book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, Melanie Joy explores the invisible system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why. She calls this system carnism.
Carnism is the belief system, or ideology, that allows us to selectively choose which animals become our meat, and it is sustained by complex psychological and social mechanisms. Like other "isms" (racism, ageism, etc.), carnism is most harmful when it is unrecognized and unacknowledged. Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows names and explains this phenomenon and offers it up for examination. Unlike the many books that explain why we shouldn't eat meat, Joy's book explains why we do eat meat - and thus how we can make more informed choices as citizens and consumers.

Brainwashed by American Tradition!
I really enjoyed this book, not because the content was enjoyable, but because it allowed me another opportunity to awaken! I have recently transitioned from Vegetarian to Strick Vegetarian on a Vegan Plant-Based Diet. What I gained from this book was that we are quite possibly a product of our society. Had we grown up in another country our views on pets, food and clothes may greatly differ (or not). Point being, most of the people who become vegetarian or vegan struggle with being "perfect" and we tend to beat ourselves up when we make a mistake (for those of us who have) for a vegetarian that could mean accidentally eating a meat byproduct or a vegan accidentally eating cheese. This book helps to connect the dots as to why we may psychologically behave the way we do. With that said, the main point of the book in my opinion is to literally shock you into understanding the American culture. There is a ton that I "knew" but somehow listening to every word hit home in a way that was bigger than ever before...bigger than the China Study! The author is very detailed and her research is very extensive. I was captivated by the obvious amount of time and energy she has committed to not only understand this subject herself but share it with us. Listening to this book solidified my choice to love my dogs and not eat meat or purchase animal products to wear. You cannot listen to this book without somehow being changed forever. This book is not just for vegs, it really is a social study that would benefit everyone to have more knowledge. The book is well researched and I believe it can provide an outlook to everyone.

Intro to the term carnism.
Would you consider the audio edition of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows to be better than the print version?
I often find the audio version a better option as I read the books whilst driving. With printed versions I buy them with great intentions but don't find time to sit down and read.
What did you like best about this story?
This gave a slightly different perspective on animal rights, viewing it as a system that we participate in as meat eaters yet refuse to recognise the disjuncture between the realities of the process and our concerns for animal rights in society.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I found the narrator really annoying at times cringe worthy especially in relation to the content.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book made me consider my own participation in this system and it did make me cry at times it made me feel guilty for the suffering coursed and the knowledge regulations are not there to monitor and protect these helpless creatures. It made me realise just how shocking humans can be especially those who put money above moral ethics and basic empathy.
Any additional comments?
If they can stand the narrator everyone should read this book.

Gristle: From Factory Farms to Food Safety (Thinking Twice About the Meat We Eat) , it's the same theme.

No I didn't. I loved her voice and interpretation.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Compassion, health, sustainability, vegan, vegetarian
Any additional comments?
I really like this experience, I was familiar with the issues on the book and decided to try my first audiobook with it.

Compelling Case
Already a Vegan but contained some things I've not been aware of. I've never looked at this whole thing as a belief system but she really makes the case for it. Maybe I would've made the transition a little sooner having listened to this book.

very introductory book for the veg - curious
I enjoyed this book, and there were many great insights especially on what goes on behind the CAFOs. however, I was expecting more deep philosophical reasons to not eat meat. I feel like bringing up animal intelligence is irrelevant and one could easily justify "humane" meat, dairy etc by the end of the book based on the points made. overall it was good though!!

I'm Happy To Be Vegetarian
After listening the audiobook has given me strength and power to stand out of crowd. I just realized that what we eat not solely about filling our empty stomach, but need to consider the ethical before we put food on our table. I thank the author for her insight.

Great, convincing and concise introduction
... into the inner workings of carnism. (Some of) it's sociological, psychological, and, overall ideological aspects are explained in a manner that's easy to follow through. The breaking with typically-perceived "normality" provides this refreshing text strength, impact and plenty of food for further thought.
the narrator's voice appears a little preachy at some moments, in a way the well-thought-through text does not deserve.
great listen!

Educational Author...Slow Narrator
A very good intro into the ills of animal farming...clear content and thoroughly researched. A must read/ listen for any one looking to switch to a vegetarian lifestyle. Only draw back is the narrator is terrible. I found switching to a 1.25 listening speed alleviated most of the monotony in her voice.

Eye-opening
Very interesting book about animal agriculture and how our society connects to it.
Contrary to other commenters, I found the narrators voice easy to listen to and suitable for this type of content.

Excellent book robotic speaker
The speaker sounds like a robot. It was very hard to listen to her and it seems very cotrardictory to hear such a robot voice on such a emotional topic. Hope the next books will have a more empathic speaker that is easier to listen to.
