    Description

In this epic and haunting love story set on the Oregon Trail, a family and their unlikely protector find their way through peril, uncertainty, and loss.

The Overland Trail, 1853: Naomi May never expected to be widowed at 20. Eager to leave her grief behind, she sets off with her family for a life out West. On the trail, she forms an instant connection with John Lowry, a half-Pawnee man straddling two worlds and a stranger in both.

But life in a wagon train is fraught with hardship, fear, and death. Even as John and Naomi are drawn to each other, the trials of the journey and their disparate pasts work to keep them apart. John’s heritage gains them safe passage through hostile territory only to come between them as they seek to build a life together.

When a horrific tragedy strikes, decimating Naomi’s family and separating her from John, the promises they made are all they have left. Ripped apart, they can’t turn back, they can’t go on, and they can’t let go. Both will have to make terrible sacrifices to find each other, save each other, and eventually...make peace with who they are.

    Good story, bad reader

Good story, well written, but main character can be very annoying. The worst part is the reader. The male reader is VERY GOOD, but the female reader is horrible when she does make voices. I will never listen to this book again because of this reader. To me, it was painful.

    Fantastic

Completely, unexpectedly amazing story. There is not one chapter that didn’t have me enthralled. I felt every word in my heart.

    Overall, a great story

I felt that the writing in this story was outstanding. It was very descriptive and made me feel an assortment of emotions throughout. Where this lacked for me was the narration. I loved the male narrator’s take on reading the story but the female narrator made her character seem weak which conflicted with the male’s description of her. Also, listening to her speak in the voices of men made me cringe.

    Overall, I enjoyed the story.

    Wonderful!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Yes, I read it first and then listened. It’s a powerful novel rich in wisdom and insights. Historical yet still modern. Excellent!

Solid story, narration leaves a lot to be desired

The story was well written, but could not enjoy the narration. I have listened to Lauren Ezzo narrate others, but just couldn't get past her "man's" voice. It was distracting and took away from the story, IMO.

Definitely worth listening to the Author's Note at the end.

    Favorites List ✔️

So, this is a big one for me. My first EVER historical romance read. YESSS, I'll say it again for the people in the back. My historical romance, cherry has been popped. It was part of my reading goals from last year that got carried over to this year. I wanted it to be from an author that can depend on their writing. I'm so thankful that I chose Amy Harmon, she's a phenomenal writer. I ended up listening to the audiobook, the narrators were great. I got wrapped up in the story and couldn't stop listening. Just as it is with the other books that I've read from Amy, this book left its stamp on my heart. Without a doubt, I'll be reading more historical fiction novels.

Moving story that takes you along for an adventure

Beautiful, heartbreaking story that I couldn't "put down" (whatever the audio book version of that is). Highly recommend

    Nothing new

Indians steal woman, kill family, women falls in love with half blood. Story is choppy, old.

    Well-researched, well-written historical fiction

While this was a well-researched and well-written historical fiction, I didn't feel like the plot was as strong as other Harmon books I've read recently. A few of the plot twists felt a little too coincidental. It was still interesting and I'm glad I read it. I found the narration a little distracting at the start, but got use to it.

Danke Amy!
