In 1944, British bomber pilot Hugo Langley parachuted from his stricken plane into the verdant fields of German-occupied Tuscany. Badly wounded, he found refuge in a ruined monastery and in the arms of Sofia Bartoli. But the love that kindled between them was shaken by an irreversible betrayal. Nearly 30 years later, Hugo's estranged daughter, Joanna, has returned home to the English countryside to arrange her father's funeral. Among his personal effects is an unopened letter addressed to Sofia. In it is a startling revelation.

Histoire
Amanda King and Tess Cuffe are strangers who share the same Georgian house, but their lives couldn't be more different. Amanda seems to have it all, absolute perfection. She projects all the accoutrements of a lady who lunches. Sadly, the reality is a soulless home, an unfaithful husband and a very lonely heart. By comparison, in the basement flat, unwanted tenant Tess has spent a lifetime hiding and shutting her heart to love. It takes a bossy doctor, a handsome gardener, a pushy teenager and an abandoned cat to show these two women that sometimes letting go is the first step to moving forward and new friendships can come from the most unlikely situations.

Description
An Amazon Charts most-read and most-sold book.
Author Barbara Davis deftly explores an emotionally charged landscape of pain, loss, and despair - and the risk one woman will take in the hope of loving again.
As a teenage runaway and child of an addict, Christy-Lynn learned the hard way that no address was permanent, and no promise sacred. For a while, she found a safe haven in her marriage to bestselling crime novelist Stephen Ludlow - until his car skidded into Echo Bay. But Stephen’s wasn’t the only body pulled from the icy waters that night. When details about a mysterious violet-eyed blonde become public, a media circus ensues, and Christy-Lynn runs again.
Desperate for answers, she’s shattered to learn that Stephen and his mistress had a child - a little girl named Iris, who now lives in poverty with her ailing great-grandmother. The thought of Iris abandoned to the foster care system - as Christy-Lynn once was - is unbearable. But she’s spent her whole life running - determined never to be hurt again. Will she finally stand still long enough to open herself up to forgiveness and love?

A great story about healing and new starts in life
The story is realistic and the characters are engaging. I couldn’t put it down. The book is about overcoming childhood circumstances and the pain of growing up in a dysfunctional family and the foster care system, but it is more about how to find healing and happiness despite those circumstances. The descriptions of life in rural West Virginia are so accurate, I felt I was there. Anyone who has yet to face their past and find healing should read this book. Anyone who has been hurt and needs to forgive and love again should read this book.

Great story
I absolutely adore this book! I didn’t know much about it and got it because it sounded interesting. After a few chapters, I found when I put it down I was drawn back into it, reading it from my phone, tablet, listenin on audible anywhere I could! The story is so powerful of love, courage, forgiveness, and truly finding ones self! Highly recommend!

Loved it!
It was a lovely story. Even though I was sure how it would end I enjoyed the journey. I wouldn't mind reading a sequel to this book.

Good read.
I enjoyed this book a lot. My only criticism is it took too long to understand why the main character was so secretive about her past. I was hoping for that a little sooner.

Believable
Couldn't stop listening. The story was very engaging. Just as an outcome seems obvious, there is a new twist. - just enough to keep Interest without causing angst.

Disappointing
This had an intriguing description and a strong start... but as the story goes on, the main character just becomes annoying. There's one twist... not a terribly shocking one.. the rest of the time is just her internal battle that seemed pointless and anticlimactic. very disappointed. I sped up the audio just to muster thru the last 25%.

tripe and predictable. one of the worst reads.
I listened for 3 hours to the most tripe predictable story. I couldn't go on for fear of losing more brain cells.
