Description

The saga of the legendary Courtney family continues in this 14th installment in Wilbur Smith's best-selling series - the sequel to 2009's Assegai - a thrilling tale of espionage, adventure, and danger, set in Africa and spanning from the Great War's end to the dark days of World War II.

As a member of the remarkable Courtney family, Leon Courtney knows how quickly fortunes can be won and lost. Over the course of more than two centuries, generations of his family have risen and fallen with the tides of history. Leon, too, has experienced his own share of triumph and pain. In the wake of his beloved wife's death, the renowned big-game hunter is raising his young daughter, Saffron, alone in colonial Kenya.

In the 1920s the continent of Africa is a dangerous place. As Leon attempts to navigate the murky political waters of this most exquisitely beautiful and wildest of lands, his daughter grows into an independent and headstrong young woman bound for a far different life in Britain, as a student at Oxford.

But over the course of more than two decades, spies, traitors, and adventurers will dog their every step. As the fitful years of peace lead to the outbreak of the Second World War - involving Africa once more - Leon and Saffron must fight for their survival...and that of their illustrious family.

Wilbur Smith masterfully captures the tensions that will spark a war across continents - and the uncertainty and hopes of a father and daughter caught in its grips - in this engrossing novel that delivers the fast-paced action and vivid history that have made him a living legend.

Ended too abruptly

I was expecting some kind of conclusion to this novel. The abrupt ending was a terrible let down. It was in very poor taste and uncharacteristic of Smith's style. I have come to understand that he has forfeited his current works to ghost writers and he simply puts his name on the cover. It was like the power went out in the theatre halfway through the movie. Very disappointing.

Voice sounds manipulated

The book was pretty good. But I suspect the voice was electronically manipulated. Like in the 70's when they would slow the voices on the radio down to give it a raspy, deeper quality. It was hard to listen to. But I'm a Wilbur Smith fan and I enjoyed the story.

A very large and more complex volume

This book is the most complex and busy book that I have read and listened to from the series. Although I enjoyed the book, it was very complex, with a lot of moving parts, and, to me it lacked the majesty and beauty found in previous books

Appalling narration...buy the book instead

What would have made War Cry better?

Over the years I have read all of Wilbur Smiths novels, and enjoyed many of those that have made it to audio book format. Not the case with War Cry. The reader was terrible. I was not even able to make it through the first chapter - turned off the iPod, immediately purchased the Kindle version instead - really enjoyed it.
A shame, this is a good read ruined by a poor narration.

What other book might you compare War Cry to and why?

Similar to some of Wilbur Smith's other African works. Draws together other branches of Courtney family, and makes for a good read.

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Barrett’s performances?

Absolutely not. The bloke should be given a generous pension in exchange for the promise never to perform again.

What character would you cut from War Cry?

Enjoyed them all.
