    Description

    A Sabbat Worlds novel.

We will make our own history, and all other accounts be damned.

Listen to it because...Volpone Glory covers the exploits of the soldiers of the 50th Volpone of the Royal Volpone Regiment. Their ranks are filled with proud and arrogant soldiers who come from the noble families of Volpone, earning them the name 'Bluebloods' among the Astra Militarum. Nick Kyme breathes life and humility into the members of this otherwise supercilious regiment as they battle against impossible odds.

The story: as war rages across the Sabbat Worlds, the Volpone Bluebloods are sent to Gnostes at the head of a massive Imperial host. Tasked with the liberation of the Agria island chain from the entrenched Blood Pact, the haughty soldiers of the Volpone find their mettle sorely tested in a brutal meat grinder. After a punishing setback threatens to derail the campaign, an unlikely champion rises through the ranks and victory once again seems possible. But the propaganda of war is a fickle beast, and the Archenemy are cultivating a plot the Imperium can scarcely fathom. Through glory and honour, the Volpone are desperate to prevail, but can they endure the rigours of the bloodiest campaign in their vaunted history and come out the other side intact?

Written by Nick Kyme, narrated by Andrew Wincott.

    Really Good

The story was really good if not a tad bit predictable. The narrator took some getting used to but the narration grew on me.

    I loved it

Having been a long time fan of the Guant's Ghosts series it was really refreshing to get some insight into their biggest rivals

So bad I'm hoping for a mind cleansing

I don't often review books on Audible but every time I see this title in my library I am filled with loathing.

    > > Light Spoilers < <

    Overall:
Having read hundreds of 40k books, this one stands out as somehow worse than the typical bolter porn. At least when you are going on a romp with a squad or chapter of Space Bros you can believe that there are stakes. After following the Volpone for fifteen hours I kept thinking to myself, "who cares?" Who cares if these people win or lose or die or get eaten by demons. Isn't that the point of 40k? At least with Gaunt there are recognizable characters who a) cannot be replaced and b) develop as characters. Give me one reason why the Volpone couldn't just have all died and then been replaced by literally anyone else.

    Performance:
Andrew Wincott is not my favorite narrator. His performance in the Night Lords books is his best. While some have said they like the sardonic tone, I find it out of place. Perhaps this is my own headcanon for 40k but I just don't feel like the Night Lords and the Volpone should sound any kind of similar. Give me some of that David Seddon? or John Banks? Wincott just sounds too smarmy for my taste.

    Story:
Who cares about a narrative if everyone dies at the end of every act. Throughout this entire novel, the reader is introduced to characters... so many characters... who don't do anything. I feel like an honest third of this book follows this format: "Here is Sargent/lieutenant/private/captain ______. They are adjectives. They feel emotions. They are now dead." The Publishers Summary claims that this book "breaths life and humility" into the bluebloods but the good guy stay good, the arrogant ones stay arrogant, and the staby ones are still staby at the end. Nothing happens to anyone except death. And even when they die there is another convenient name who just fills the pages with their pointless drivel.

Honestly, throughout this entire book, I just kept thinking "who is that and why do I care." I don't mind telling you, I didn't care.

I could go one for another page about all the missed opportunities I kept hoping for. There are so many layups in this book that could have led to a terrific story but no.

Character arcs, intersecting: a cut above the norm

What a great book! by the end it was a gripping page turner I didn't want to end. The characters, how they were built up and how they interacted throughout the middle and end was awesome. Great character arcs and interactions between them. honestly, we don't get that kind of quality, or at least I haven't seen it very much, writing in Warhammer 40k novels. I'm hoping for more just like this!

I think this is personal taste, but I like the voice actors voice - much gravitas very talent - yet it was a bit slow? I put the book on 1.35X speed and made sure my bass boost headphones setting was off because he already has plenty, and it was perfect.

    well done Nick and Andrew!

    Gripping and excellent narration

Great story with good classic IG fights, intrigue, and mystery behind the front lines. The voice acting is excellent, now my favorite between this and the ADB Night Lords series.

One of the better recent releases by BL.

Volpone Glory! Ignore "KeEp pOliTiCs oUt Of WH"

A truly fantastic piece about the horrors of fascism, eternal war, and classism; please ignore the morons in this section complaining about "virtue signaling" (which isn't a thing, every work of art ever is political in some way). Competently written characters with clear motivations meet a truly epic plot to create the saga of a regiment of aristocrats and nobles coming to terms with the fact that their senses of superiority exist only in their own minds. 10/10.

The plot is all over the place

The narrator did an amazing job! Mr. Wincott definitely deserves some good praise for his work.

The plot starts off about A, then shifts to AB, then to D and finishes with C. It's really strange, not bad but really weird. some of the turns are really well done and others near the end just feel really pulled from thin air. more than a few times I was legitimately confused if I missed some sort of sentence or clue from earlier.

Overall it does have some interesting politics with your usual gratuitous violence.

Despite all of these mixed feelings I would recommend it to have a listen but just know there are hard cuts and jarring plot twists.

Oh, and if you take a shot everytime they say, "Volpone glory!" You will be dead of alcohol poisoning by the middle of the book.

    Great, Want More

Gaunt’s Ghosts is my favorite series of all time, and I was concerned going into this that it wouldn’t match up. I was surprised how quickly I became engrossed in it. The culture of the Volpone feels believable and the characters were different enough to stand out. I’ve read a few reviews talking about politics and wokeness but I didn’t feel that way at all. A female officer mentions misogyny like 3 times and it’s pretty understandable in those moments.

All in all give it a listen. I went in with 5/10 expectations and came out excited for more.

If you love Gaunts Ghosts, this is much better

The reader is perfect for the story, which is quite thrilling and as interesting as Gaunts Ghosts.

    Theateical

The story was probably good but it was read way to slow and theatrical.
