Description

In the second book in the New York Times best-selling mystery series, Veronica Mars is back with a case that will expose the hidden workings of one of Neptune's most murderous locations.

The Neptune Grand has always been the seaside town's ritziest hotel, despite the shady dealings and high-profile scandals that seem to follow its elite guests. When a woman claims that she was brutally assaulted in one of its rooms and left for dead by a staff member, the owners know that they have a potential powder keg on their hands. They turn to Veronica to disprove - or prove - the woman's story.

The case is a complicated mix of hard facts, mysterious occurrences, and uncooperative witnesses. The hotel refuses to turn over its reservation list and the victim won't divulge who she was meeting that night. Add in the facts that the attack happened months ago, the victim's memory is fuzzy, and there are holes in the hotel's surveillance system, and Veronica has a convoluted mess on her hands. As she works to fill in the missing pieces, it becomes clear that someone is lying - but who? And why?

Could not finish audio book, will be reading it.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend that they read the book. The narrator is too monotonous.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Couldn't finish listening. Will read the book instead

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes. Unfortunately, narrator is monotonous and boring. Sounds like the science teacher in The Wonder Years.

Was Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell worth the listening time?

No, I will be reading it

What! No Kristen Bell?! This feels so wrong....

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Lowman’s performance?

It's like Rebecca never watched the series, never kickstarted the movie, never watched the movie, and never listened to the first book. Seriously not a marshmallow....didn't even try.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Super disappointed and a little weirded out.

Any additional comments?

Snappy lines without Kristen Bell fall so short and sound rude instead of charming.I'll be following other's advice and returning this audio book. Reading the book, I can at least channel my inner Veronica Mars/Kristen Bell voice.

Darn!!

Rob Thomas!! Kirsten Bell!! Fix this!! :)

The narrator ruins the entire experience.

What did you like best about Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell? What did you like least?

This is a five-star book with a zero-star performance. All the reviewers who complained about the monotonous voice of the narrator were NOT exaggerating. It's horrible. It's like she's been given a sedative and then asked to read. It is so disappointing because this audiobook could be amazing with Kristen Bell and at least tolerable with someone other than the narrator who was used. It's really bad. Sad and bad. I think this book should be re-recorded with Kristen Bell and everyone who had the misfortune of buying this version should get automatically get a copy. PLEASE.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is good but the narrator sounds so bored (and/or medicated) that it's hard to listen to for extended periods of time.

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Lowman’s performance?

Everything. Monotonous. Deadened. Sounded like reading it was the worst chore imaginable for her. Ruined the whole experience.

Do you think Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

YES! With Kristen Bell narrating. And please re-record this book with Kristen Bell.

Any additional comments?

I always believe a narrator can make or break an audiobook experience. In this case, she definitely broke it.

Kristen Bell is the only voice of Veronica Mars

Would you consider the audio edition of Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell to be better than the print version?

Nope.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The narrator's voice was grating. She spoke way too slowly and made Veronica's character sound weak.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rebecca Lowman’s performances?

NOPE.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

I love everything about Veronica Mars so I enjoyed imagining familiar characters while listening to this book. However the narration is so poor, it took away from the experience. The only voices that didn't get on my nerves were those when she read the parts of the male characters.

Narrator is not a good fit

What made the experience of listening to Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell the most enjoyable?

I love seeing the continuation of the characters' lives in the Veronica Mars universe. Glad there was some significant Logan in this one. And a pony.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Veronica and other characters have snappy lines of dialogue, but the narrator's take on these render the humor and snark we've come to love in the Veronica Mars stories almost unnoticeable. I think reading the print would have allowed me to enjoy this aspect of the writing much more. I found the pace of the reading to be too slow and sleepy to match the story and the characters well. I had to listen to it at a faster speed to tolerate it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Veronica and Logan on the beach. Lovely. Can't say more on account of spoilers and such.

Any additional comments?

I hope the series continues. If not with the amazing Kristen Bell narrating, then at least with someone who understands the feel of the characters and the series overall. Make watching the TV series and/or movie a pre-requisite for anyone narrating.

Wrong Narrator

I know Kristen Bell wasn't available but this narrator sounded dead. There was no vocal variety. She never sounded excited or sarcastic. It sounded like a bored person reading out loud. The storyline however was lovely and I wish the series would continue.

Story great. Narrator ok.

It needed Kristen Bell again as the narrator, but the story was amazing. I can only hope that there will be a third book. I need more Veronica, Logan, Keith, and all the other characters in my life.

Time with characters I love... as for the story,

To preface this I'm a long-term fan. I watched the show from episode 1, and I loved the idea of Veronica Mars books. However, for anyone with less exposure to the series, I could see this as being a very poorly paced book. A lot of the high action events we've seen through out most of the Veronica Mars world were absent in this book. It was much more procedural, and for that possibly more realistic, but also less surprising. I enjoyed spending time with characters that I've come to appreciate over the years, so that their new to Veronica Mars might not have the same patience.
Halfway through the book I suppose what was supposed to be a major twist seemed more like a lapse in observation on Veronica's part. This could be explained by a major issue weighing on her mind throughout the book, but is not like our usual girl. There were major jumps in time related to waiting for DNA results, that again realistic, caused the story to lose momentum.
Interactions with Logan were very sweet, even a squee moment when Veronica finally got her pony. One other aspect that kept me going was the portrayal of the military members and their dependents. This is not a major point in the book but, the accuracy and sympathy with which very real issues were dealt with in this novel, wear something a greatly enjoyed as a member of the US Navy myself.
Did I enjoy this as much as the first book? No. Would I recommend this book to a friend? I wouldn't start with this book but I still recommend the series.

Disappointed by the choice of narrator

What did you like best about Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell? What did you like least?

it may not be fair to Rebecca Lowman but she is not Veronica Mars. I will go listen to the book now and return with a better review.

from a VM fan's perspective...

First off, I must say I am a huge VM fan - TV series, movie, and now the books. The second novel "Mr. Kiss and Tell" is paced a bit faster, and the storyline is more complex. The novel directly follows "A Million Dollar Tan Line" and has more of Veronica and Logan than the first part. All in all, it's a fun read.

As far as the reader is concerned, I would have a hard time with anyone who is not Kristen Bell. IMHO, she read the first VM-audiobook so well that one could often recognize the characters from Bell's changed speech-pattern alone.

Rebecca Lowman is a complete change from Bell's perkiness. Lowman reads more slowly and in an almost depressed tone that does not fit at all. Veronica's snarkiness and the snappy dialogue both get lost in the unnecessarily dark mood Lowman's performance creates. She is probably a good performer but I find her to be the wrong choice for the VM-books.

Wenn nur die Sprecherin nicht wäre

Habe mehrmals überlegt, aufzuhören. Habe selten eine so gelangweilt scheinende Sprecherin gehört. Absolute Fehlbesetzung!
