Bob Dylan’s music drifts out of Tom Patterson’s computer speakers, at once ethereal and down to Earth. As he listens, Tom’s mind drifts back to the 1960s and Dianne, the girl who left him for California. Tom could have—should have—gone with her, but he chose his new job in Ohio. And that was that. He never heard from her again.
After the death of his wife, Dayton, Ohio feels very small and depressing. Maybe it’s the magic in Dylan’s vocals, or maybe it’s an urge that’s grown within Tom for decades, but he decides to go to California in search of Dianne, if only to say, “Hi.”
En route, Tom meets a young woman seeking her birth mother. Suze Arnold is also heading to California and needs help getting there. Circumstances conspire to throw the two together: both seeking long-lost women, and neither knowing whom they’ll find or how they’ll feel if their searches are successful.
A fictional memoir laced with the folk music of the '60s and '70s, Twists of Fate is a nostalgic story of love lost and found—despite the gulfs of time and distance.
