In the near-future American theocracy, faith is mandatory, motherhood is duty, and every fetus is a citizen with legal rights. Hospitals double as battlegrounds where the God Mothers hunt down “feticiders.”
James is a wounded veteran working as a hospital security officer, patrolling corridors and monitoring cameras as part of his beat. And, sometimes, he moves desperate women from the hospital into the Upline network—smuggling pregnant to freedom beyond the border.
When doctor--and God Mother--collapses with a life-threatening pregnancy, James faces deadly choices: expose himself to the God Mothers, save her, and possibly doom himself or them both.
This short story is set in the Shmuley Myers Mysteries detective series. Check out solsharp.com for more information.
