#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK • READ BY MERYL STREEP

“Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature.”—The Guardian

In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America’s finest writers.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

L’intringue un peu simpliste par moments nous rappelle tout simplement ce qu’est le vrai bonheur dans une vie. L’interprétation de Meryl Streep est impeccable et embellit le tout.

    Un beau récit de vie

It’s been a long time since I read such a pleasant story. It is about youth and the friends we have, the choices we make, and being able to forgive , remember, and look back. Quite pleasant!

    Very interesting and simple story

Meryl did an amazing job reading Tom Lake. I can still hear her voice and see the cherry orchards with the girls laying under the trees.
It is a beautiful story and is filled will love, laughter, friendship and nostalgia. I highly recommend it, one of the best books I have read in a long time.

    Brilliantly read

Lovely story of young love, old love and the families that surround both. Telling children what our lives were like and what has stayed important through the years. Only Ann Patchett can tell these stories without sounding corny.
Meryl Streep is a great narrator. She brought an intimacy to the telling of all that went before.

    Another home run, Ann Patchett

I admire Ann Pachett for creating a story of mostly kind and not so extraordinary characters that somehow managed to strike improbable emotional chords. The tale is believable, enjoyable and enriching.

Superbly crafted story raised to an even higher level by the incredible voices of Meryl Streep

Difficult to know how much of the turgid tragic nostalgia is Meryl Streep's reading and how much Ann Patchett's writing. I very much like both MS and AP, which I find extraordinarily talented... but this book? The story idea was wonderful and could have produced a book that was moving by its simplicity and relevance to everyday life - instead, everyday life is dressed up like Versailles. It was hard to listen to the end (and the end is interminably and rather silly).
I will try to return it.....

    Dripping with sentimentality
