Description

One of Tom Clancy's most storied characters, Dominic Caruso, is the only one who can stop America's secrets from falling into enemy hands in this blockbuster new novel written by Clancy's longtime coauthor.

Over the course of three decades, Tom Clancy created a world alive with prescient action and remarkable individuals. In Tom Clancy Support and Defend, Dominic Caruso is presented with the deadliest challenge of his career.

Dominic Caruso. Nephew of President Jack Ryan. FBI agent and operator for The Campus, a top secret intelligence agency that works off the books for the U.S. government. Already scarred by the death of his brother, Caruso is devastated when he can't save a friend and his family from a terrorist attack.

Ethan Ross was a mid-level staffer for the National Security Council. Now he's a wanted fugitive on the run with a microdrive that contains enough information to wreck American intelligence efforts around the world. The CIA is desperate to get the drive back, but so are the Russians and various terrorist groups all of whom are closer to catching the fugitive. Only Caruso stands in their way, but can he succeed without the aid of his Campus colleagues?

A great action packed spy novel!

This is a great action packed spy novel. Ethan Ross is on the run with information everybody wants. Dom Caruso wants revenge for the death of a friend and his family. A great story read by Scott Brick who gives an excellent performance. Dom Caruso is the only Campus operator who oppears in this novel with reference to the others only. Still it is probably one of the better Campus novels even though their is no Jack Ryan Senior or Junior in this book. Mark Greaney does a great job continuing on with this series on his own after the death of Tom Clancy with whom the Campus novels were co-written. A great read and an enjoyable listen. Tom Clancy readers will not be disappointed.

Wish it was still Lou Diamond Phillips narrating

The narrating isn't bad, it just isn't the same. Good story line and we'll written. I am going to miss Ton Clancy.

First post-Clancy book; IMHO not a "Campus" book

Would you try another book from Mark Greaney and/or Scott Brick?

I don't think I'll be back to Mark Greaney; for me there are better choices out there.

Scott Brick, to me, has a great voice quality but he also has a strange narrative style; many times he ends sentences almost as if they are questions. "I am going to the bathroom?", "He stepped out of the shower?"; distracting and out of character.

Would you recommend Tom Clancy Support and Defend to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend. IMHO, this is not a true Clancy-quality book or a "Campus" book in anyway, shape or form; if you are expecting a new Campus novel with all of the crew you will be disappointed.

This book, on the cover, claims to be a "Campus" novel. You will not see Jack Ryan here, nor Junior, nor will you see most of the major Campus characters. It was almost as if whoever owns the rights to Clancys character told Greaney "Look, now that Toms' gone and you're on your own you can write a book with 3 minor Campus members and if that works out we'll see about letting you write with some of his main characters". About all that shows up here is Dominic Caruso (the main character and the most prevalent Campus player of this book), the minor Campus character Adara Sherman (Flight Attendant \ Nurse) and very, very brief appearances by Jerry Hendley (Campus chief). Other than that, no Campus. Very disappointing.

What three words best describe Scott Brick’s performance?

Overly-dramatized performance

Was Tom Clancy Support and Defend worth the listening time?

Yes, but I was ready for it to be over.

Any additional comments?

The story seemed a bit too contrived in many ways.

I don't care for stories where the main characters just happen to have info or connections right where they need them at a critical juncture; it seems unimaginative. To me, this seems to happen several times in this story. Paraphrasing one example in this book: Caruso: "I need information on naval vessels". Sherman:" Well I just happen to have been in the Navy and know all there is to know about that". Please.

Curb your expectations!

Mark Greaney is not Tom Clancy, and Clancy wasn't Greaney, either. If you picked up this book expecting the writing and the storytelling to be exactly the way Clancy would have done it, you aren't being realistic. No two people will write the same story the same way, and Mr. Clancy is gone.

This review is probably colored by the fact that I am a huge Greaney fan, and also by the fact that I was growing weary of Clancy's writing. I just finished Clancy's "The Bear and the Dragon" and it was over 40 hours long. I had to MAKE myself finish it. Clancy's writing had become ridiculously tedious and preachy.

Clancy fleshed out his characters a little more fully than Greaney tends to, and I hope Greaney will move in that direction in future titles. There's a reason John Clark, et al. are such beloved characters, and it's because Clancy took the time to delve into their souls.

This book was a fast-paced, excellent read, and I can't wait for the next one!

Pretty good, needs more character development

The plot itself was pretty good. Plenty of action and suspense. It was a curious book in that Greaney spent time exploring the character and motivations of the main "bad guy" and not nearly as much about the Dom Caruso, the main hero. I would have liked to know more what makes Dom tick. As it stands the book made him pretty 2 dimensional.

Good and fun, but...

Would you listen to Tom Clancy Support and Defend again? Why?

I will listen to it again someday. It is a book. It's just not a Clancy...

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was predictable. But the execution of the ending was exciting.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Therein lies the problem... Since there were 4... 5, maybe 6 characters in the whole book, I guess you have to go with the star, Dom.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There really weren't any moving moments. It's an action thriller. The bullets do all the moving.

Any additional comments?

Considered a "Campus" novel, but this is not the Clancy stories that built the Ryanverse. I hoped Mark had learned a thing or two from Tom, and I'm sure he did, but Tom could weave a story that wrapped around you like a blanket. Mark has presented us a pretty good screenplay!

Support and Defend

I thought it was a good change up to the campus series. I did not enjoy the narrator. I didn't like his tone. Perhaps I grew accustomed to Lou Diamond Philips narrating. He was amazing! Please bring him back!!

Disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was a decent story, so I would not consider it a waste of time. Could have been better though.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tom Clancy Support and Defend?

One of the most memorable moments in the story was when the helo pilot faked a malfunction to allow his daughter to escape.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

The Israeli Krav Maga instructor and his family were the more memorable characters. Too bad they died faster than Yoda.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably.

Any additional comments?

This book was a bit of a disappointment. I am a huge fan of Tom Clancy, the Jack Ryan series and recently the Campus series. With that being said, I was disappointed that this didn't seem to really be a part of the series. Asides from Carusos' involvement with the Campus in previous books this could just as easily have been written as a stand alone book. You could very easily have removed the Campus involvement from this book, changed Caruso and Shermans names, and the book would have been the same, albeit without the Branding associated with Clancy, Ryan and the Campus. Granted this book would not have done as well without that Branding. I had such high hopes for this book considering Mr. Clancy won't be writing anymore. Such a waste for a Clancy book.

A Campus Novel , Really??

Just totally disappointing. Mr. Greaney is writing a Grey Man book and sticking the Clancy logo on it. This book doesnt even come close to the plots the late Mr. Clancy would spin for us. Clancy fans think back to the good old days of Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games. Even farther back to Debt of Honor or Without Remorse and compare then and this. The characters and the development of the plots that kept me turning pages into the wee hours, I remember how detailed and precise those novels were. Remember how ALIVE those people were and what we have here is just clap-trap.

+-

-Not enough detailed tradecraft and combat information.
-not enough investigation for the novels content.
+a quite nice Jason Bourne HOLLYWOOD story.
