Description

“Rachel beautifully illustrates that loving fiercely and grieving deeply are often two halves of the same whole. Her story will break you down and lift you up.” (Glennon Doyle, author of the number one New York Times best seller Love Warrior and founder of Together Rising)

While on her way to teach a yoga retreat in March 2014, Rachel Brathen collapses at an airport, brought to her knees by excruciating stomach pains. She is rushed to the hospital on the tiny island of Bonaire and hours later forced to undergo surgery. When she wakes up from anesthesia, her boyfriend is weeping at her bedside. While Rachel was struck down with seemingly mysterious pain, her best friend, Andrea, sustained fatal injuries as a result of a car accident. Rachel and Andrea had a magical friendship. Though they looked nothing alike - one girl tall, blond, and Swedish, the other short, brunette, and Colombian - everyone called them gemelas: twins.

Over the three years following Andrea’s death, at what might appear from the outside to be the happiest time - with her engagement to the man she loves and a blossoming career that takes her all over the world - Rachel faces a series of trials that have the potential to define her life. Unresolved grief and trauma from her childhood make the weight of her sadness unbearable. At each turn, she is confronted again and again with a choice: Will she lose it all, succumb to grief, and grasp for control that’s beyond her reach? Or can she move through the loss and let go?

When Rachel and her husband conceive a child, pregnancy becomes a time to heal and an opportunity to be reborn herself. As she recounts this transformative period, Rachel shares her hard-won wisdom about life and death, love and fear, what it means to be a mother and a daughter, and how to become someone who walks through the fire of adversity with the never-ending practice of loving hard and letting go.

Eye opening

This book meant a journey, a phrase as simple as the title let me acknowledge parts of my life and allow me to grief to things I didn't felt I had the right to. It allow me to feel empathy to other by feeling compassion towards me.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful

From the start this book is so honest and real. Rachel shines the light on her life, and her journey of learning to let go of some things from her past to move forward. It was so beautifully written, and read! I will recommend it to many people, especially if you are on a journey of finding something or letting go of it.

Thank you for helping me come back to me

For the past couple of months, I've slowly lost my enthusiasm for pretty much all of the things that brought me butterflies, which was such a sad realization to come to. Reading this book reminded in certain ways of how I used to be, adventurous and optimistic. It made me realize that we don't need to let our hardships or fear stray us away from who we are and that it's ok to take all the time necessary to heal ourselves and our past and still be able to manifest our dream life!

The book I needed to hear

My niece recommended this book, while we attended a family holiday party. We both are oldest children/daughters, who went through similar experiences because of parent dysfunctional divorces, and she said it was great in helping her understand the complicated relationship she has had with her parents. I agree with my niece's assessment. Rachel Brathen's story really spoke to me about why I had made some of the decisions I did while growing up, because of the dysfunctional parents I had. It is a great listen, and helped to validate this complicated relationship, as well as, give me the courage to re-frame the current relationship I have with them. You can be happy and break the cycle of dysfunction~

Gut-wrenching and Beautiful

I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of times I cried while listening to Rachel read her stories. She has gained the most beautifully inspiring insight to things that happen to us in life that often times can’t be explained. To Love and Let Go has helped me in my journey of self-discovery and learning how to deal with pain. Thank you, Rachel.

It will start your journey to heal.

From the beginning of the book I knew it was a special one. I could resonate with so much. Her words are so deep and so incredibly honest. Hear someone being that VULNERABLE and being able to also feel vulnerable is amazing. It’s a must read, a must listen. Be ready to feel intense love.

All colors of love

In this book Rachel takes us on a journey through the many layers of grief and all colors of Love. The challenging love for her suicidal Mother, the deep, life-defining love for her best friend, the unconditional love for her Dog, and the constantly evolving love for her husband. All of these loves are presented and felt equally.
It's the strength of this book and the rare and special gift not only to feel but also to share her feelings in all their many layers, from moment of bright light and love to the darkest moment of questions like: How many times, in which my partner has to literally pick me of the floor is just one time too many? How do I tell people, that my best friend died but the death of my dog is the moment I completely fall apart?
The absolute honesty and rawness of this book makes it in parts challenging to listen to, but in the end evermore so rewarding. As a weekly listener to her podcast, hearing Rachels voice reading the book in a slightly distant voice is especially touching, as I really felt her struggle not only in living through his hardship, then writing about it and finally have to read out loud all the darkest moments of her personal journey.
It has been a service and a kindness to share this with the world and give us a moment to appreciate the full depth this extraordinary human being is capable to love, and to be with her in the heartbreaking moments where she just needed to let go.
