Description

One of the 2019 Amazon.com Best Books of the Year

"In this charming listen, narrator Therese Plummer portrays Cassie Hanwell - a confident, talented firefighter whose solitary life is upended when her estranged mother asks her to relocate to Boston.... A wonderful story of forgiveness, friendship, love, and hope." (AudioFile Magazine)

From the New York Times best-selling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new audiobook about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew - even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it all - the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become.

Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour de force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

Commentaires

"Oh, how I love Katherine Center’s writing…and her newest novel is a gem...a story that reminds us that the word emergency has, at its heart, a new beginning. Just read it, and thank me later.” (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author)

Pretty predictable

From the other reviews I was expecting a more interesting novel. This is chic lit in a firehouse.

No Blaze Here

I was excited for Katherine Center's new book because I really liked "How to Walk Away." This one seemed to be written in response to #MeToo, but it was much too contrived and very light. There just seemed to be a lot of characters in very real situations making unrealistic decisions. The highlight in the audio version was Therese Plummer's narration which was stellar.

The first book I’ve actually disliked in a long time

I didn’t realize this was a rom-com when I chose it. Not a deal breaker for me though. I’ve read some good ones, like “Evvie Drake Starts Over.” But this one was just annoying. The same phrases repeated over and over AND OVER. Over done descriptions of the same thing. Like, we get it- The Rookie is really hot, men have issues with sexism, blah blah blah. Stupid, unrealistic, meaningless and unsophisticated dialogue between characters. I liked the ending but it was exactly as expected.

Outstanding

Such a great story, covering so many emotional issues and feelings. Lots of insight about being a firefighter in a so call man’s world.Brilliantly narrated by Therese Plummer, capturing the feelings of a woman desperate to keep love and relationships at bay.

Meh

I was super excited about this book and now that it’s over, I’m underwhelmed. It was very slow in the beginning and yes it did get better and have a good ending but it was definitely a simple rom com with not a lot of depth. Also I don’t like the title. It’s not a good fit for the actual story, at least in my opinion.

Movie will be better

Very nice rom/com plot. Unfortunately main character seems unrealistic, almost cartoonish. The technical detail is great but the author fails to capture a 3 dimensional protagonist.

DIDN'T LIKE AT ALL

I didn't like the main character. She wants to be the queen of the world, the perfection, but she was so insecure ... didn't give people opportunity to talk and explain themselves.. The story is okay and didn't touch my soul.

Perfection

Katherine Center and Therese Plummer are my audible dream team!!!! The story is sweet, but provides just enough plot twists to keep things interesting until the very end!!!! Sad to have finished this one... can’t wait for the next!

Good Storyline but Weak Character Development

I enjoyed the humor, camaraderie & pranking amongst the firefighters and I appreciated the message of forgiveness woven throughout the story. However, I did not feel the characters were well developed and to me, the protagonist came across as more of a superhero than a real person.

Heavy, sweet and uncomfortably relatable.

I did not know what I was going to read, adding it to my wishlist because someone said it’s a great book. I was hooked nearly as soon as I started it. The only thing I’d wished is I’d known there’s a few triggers in this if you’ve ever dealt with past abuse. I’ve never read a book that I felt so connected with. Worth the read.
