Great reader....but the story is a bit drawn-out
I really enjoyed listening to this book. Imogen Church reads it really well. She switches seamlessly between the different accents and voices. It was very dynamic and is what got me hooked.
As for the story, I have to say I expected a bit more. Rowan's VERY detailed account of everything that happens made it so that my brain switched off at some point in the story. Also, I guessed the different twists before they were revealed and I felt the ending was a bit anticlimactic. It's not a popular opinion, but well, I'll stick to it.
Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the book and the creepy feelings it elicited.
I would recommend it but be prepared for some length in the story.

Eye roller ....
A frustrating book and performance. The reader used odd emotions in places I didn't think they should have been. This made the main character seem sometimes oddly sarcastic and petulant. The reader used 80 % of the time a quivering voice, again adding to an irritating portrayal of a weak main character.
The writer tries very hard to put in twists but they just come across as limp and try-hard. sometimes it felt like it was going to turn into exotic fiction but it doesn't... more the pity, it would have been easier to ignore the bad storytelling if it were.

Gripping
A wonderful performance and a great book. I don't often get so utterly drawn in by a story. There were twists and turns as you would expect. I don't want to spoil this book by saying too much, but I do recommend it. Just don't expect it to send you to sleep.

loved this book
I really enjoyed this book. as others have said it was hard to stop listening once I'd started. Great plot with an unexpected twist at the end. Fantastic narrator too. Highly recommended.

J'ai vraiment aimé
L'histoire est très bien menée, je suis habituée à lire des thrillers et j'aime lorsqu'on parvient (encore ) à me surprendre. Je dirais que la mission est reussie ici. C'est seulement mon deuxième thriller audio, et je me rend compte également que le fait de l'écouter et non de le lire, me permet de ne pas laisser mon cerveau trop anticiper et de chercher à deviner le dénouement de l'histoire, mais plutôt de me laisser porter par la performance du lecteur ou de la lectrice, qui est particulièrement réussie ici. Bravo à Madame Church. Je recommande ce titre. Merci

Super histoire, très prenant, super narration!
Réécriture de The Turn of the Screw, ce thriller raconte l'histoire d'une nanny qui doit s'occuper de petites pestes dans une maison ultra tech. Et l'auteure ne se prive pas en retournements de situation.
Quand le récit commence, on sait que la nanny est en prison pour le meurtre d'une des petites filles et elle clame son innocence en écrivant à un avocat susceptible de la défendre. C'est donc presque uniquement son point de vue qui est choisi. Elle répond à une annonce pour une famille fortunée et à partir de là c'est compliqué.
C'est compliqué, ça se retourne sans cesse mais c'est du bon thriller! Le personnage principal, pas forcément sympathique d'entrée de jeu, est attachant. Les petites pestes aussi.
J'avais envie de découvrir cette auteure et je ne suis pas déçue.
En prime ce livre audio en vo est servi par une narratrice très plaisante à écouter, qui donne une vraie sensation d'être dans l'histoire sans en faire des caisses.
Je recommande assurément.

Book of the year? Really?
Book of the year? Really?
I bought this book because of the 4 and 5 star reviews and the book was so disappointing. I guess we all have different taste but really Book of the year!
This was one of the most boring, drawn out, mind-numbing books I've read in a long time.
One of the children makes a remark early in the book about how things are better when he's not around. You are led to believe the child is referring to her father. If that's the case, there is no reason for the rest of the story. Everything that happened in the story was to make sure the father doesn't leave.
Nothing was believable, from Rowan to the poison garden. All the characters are shallow and it was impossible to bond with them. You were told early in the story, a child dies.
When the event happened, it just happened. It wasn't really sad, it just was.
Rowan who had worked in child care for 10 yrs, can't handle 3 small children. Sandra and Bill didn't seem to want children and were more concerned about their careers than their kids. Bill was cliche as the super wealthy pervert, as was Sandra as the ditsy blond. The handyman and the maid were just creepy. They would just pop up out of nowhere. The children were not likable.
You could pretty much figure out the ending early on in the book. With the exception of a home which was controlled almost completely by artificial intelligence, nothing really scary happened.
Maddie ( one of the children) was a sociopath. It was unbelievable with all the AI that controlled the house, Maddie was never caught on camera.
Imogen Church was fantastic with the delivery of the story and the only reason I was able to finish.

Excellent book it kept me guessing all the time, with twists and turns through the whole story. A definite must read. The narration was excellent.

Excellent
Engaging story with some surprising twists (and some not so surprising ones). A little slow in parts but overall very enjoyable and quite addictive. Can't give enough praise for the narrator, she absolutely nailed it throughout.

A masterful narration
Really enjoyed Ruth Wares latest book, made even more enjoyable by the incredible narration by Imogen Church. I have read or listened to every one of Ruth Wares books and always look forward to them. THe Turn of the Key kept my attention throughout, with a great cast of characters, and interesting plot.

Nicht die stärkste Story...
Ruth Ware Ist eine meiner Lieblingsautoren. Ich fand ihre Bücher bisher sehr atmosphärisch dicht, die Geschichten mitreißend, gut recherchiert und dazu toll gesprochen. Auch diesmal liest Imogen Church wunderbar passend zum Charakter - Allerdings Erzählt dass KinderMädchen Rowen aus dem Gefängnis heraus ihre Version der Geschichte, sie ist verzweifelt und gehetzt. Und genau so liest Imogen Church diese Buch vor! Dieser leicht hysterischen Stimme die ganze Zeit zu lauschen ist anstrengend.
Außerdem fand ich die Geschichte im Grunde langweilig. Wirklich herausgearbeitet ist nur der Charakter der Nanny. Vieles kommt mir nicht gut recherchiert vor, ein 18 Monate altes Kind, das noch nicht läuft? Dafür aber bei einer fremden Person von Anfang an durchschläft?! Passt einfach nicht! Und: Die Auflösung ist seltsam!
Ich hoffe, dass das nächste Buch von Ruth Ware wieder an die alten Erfolge anschließt!

Viel zu langatmig
Kaum Spannung in der Geschichte. Man muss rund 10 Stunden hören, um gerade noch in der letzten Minute eine unbefriedigende Auflösung - ohne so what - zu erfahren. Die Sprecherin ist großartig.
