    Description

Four hundred years in the future, women control the world but Khan Aurelius, ruler of the last free men, is determined to take back the power that has been denied men for centuries. Outnumbered by far, he knows that women need to give up their power willingly and with one of their councilwomen as a hostage, he's certain he can influence her with his superior male intellect. She is just a soft woman, after all.

Councilwoman Pearl has sacrificed herself to save an innocent priestess. Trapped in the Northlands, her soft voice and sugar-coated view of the world doesn't impress Khan, who constantly challenges her by playing his mind games to corrupt her and see things his way.

It's a battle of words and wills when the two intelligent rulers clash. Will Pearl succeed in bringing enlightenment and democracy to the primitive Nmen or will Khan corrupt her with his charm first?

    Contains mature themes.

    Good story, unfulfilling romance

This book put me in a weird position of really wanting the couple to work out but also not feeling attached to them whatsoever. They were together but I couldn’t really feel it if that makes sense.

Witty and Hot with a Cunning Plot

This was an awesome read with a refreshingly different take on the dystopian romance genre and outstanding world building. The lively and fluently written story projects a possible future one could almost imagine happening for real. The dialogues are witty and the characters are believable, intelligent and feisty (on both sides of the border) without being unreasonable or unrealistic. The story is littered with hilarious situations resulting from the clashing of the two opposing lifestyles. And the sexy passages are seductive, steamy and topped up with emotion. On top of all that the plot is an outstanding social study & political chess game that keeps the story interesting. The two male/ female narrators did an excellent job to bring the story even more to life.

    Good, not great.

The narrators brought the characters to life and they made me follow through with whole the story.

I almost stopped after approx the first 20 minutes because it was taken verbatim from book 1. I was really put off by that. I realize some readers may not have read the 1st book and they may need some back story but not verbatim... that just seems like a bad way to do it, imo.
They rest of the story was good but the 2 main characters were a bit of a struggle for me to get behind. In the end, I’m glad I finished it. I’ve already started book 3 and so far there is no repetition like in this book, so that makes me very happy!
    P.S. I loved book 1. I gave it 5 stars 🥰

    Ok.

I enjoyed the first novel in this series, THE PROTECTOR, but Khan appeared there as a regular secondary character who I didn’t like. In his own novel, he did not improve my opinion of him much. Pearl on the other hand, was a woman of strength and intellect to admire. I felt she was too good for Khan (even though he too had good qualities) and this imbalance diminished my feelings of satisfaction with the romance. However, I see this novel as essential to immersing myself in this world and it's a gateway into the novels that come next. I am keen to read them now that I am familiar with this future dystopian earth, and some of the characters that will become the main characters. The clash of the sexes, cultures and ideologies is delicious.

The narrators, Noelle Bridges and John Masterson were perfectly cast. I enjoyed their performances and I’m happy they narrate the whole series. I’ll be back for more of it.

    awesome read

This is one of the best books I have read this year. The story line was great and the narration was perfect. This book made you feel as if you were there. I'm gonna binge listen to all the books, just can't put them down.

    Great second book

I wasn't sure if I would buy into Khan's story, but it was fleshed out nicely and his capability to be romantic was believable. Great second book!

    WTF

So I read the first book and though I was put off by the extreme sexism, it was a part of the story and it seemed like it was part of a world building stepping stone. Then I started reading this one...
At the beginning I loved both characters (except for the sexism) but by the time they have sex the entire relationship is ridiculous. During their first encounter she told him no over and over again and in the end he got the tip in and was like 'please I must have you' and she said NOTHING. He took this as ascent and went ahead.

That was already F***ed up, Then she starts to develop feelings for him even though he has shown no emotional growth AT ALL. I am currently over half way through the book and both of the main characters are acting like they are falling in love- but Khan still doesn't even acknowledge that she is his equal and is still planning to use all of their plans to take over the world.
I generally finish 95% of the books I start, Even when I have no plans to finish a series, but I just can't listen to this anymore.

This book is not worth a credit or the nearly 10 hours of your time. Don't do it.

Pearl and Khan match each other so greatly.

I enjoyed exchanges between Pearl and Khan very much. Pearl is really strong, mature and thoughtful and that was one of many good things about this book. Another good thing is that Khan (and other men as well) was not experienced in a relationship with a woman at all and I find that kind of sweet.
