Within the four walls of the Rising Phoenix, the small nonprofit agency they have spent their free time growing, Thomas and Evelyn explore love, redemption, and community. Their lives soon become inextricably intertwined as Jake, who is falling into a life of drugs and legal troubles, enters their lives. Through many secrets revealed, Evelyn tells her past and her faith that became stronger through all her challenges and helps Thomas through his.

The agency becomes a sanctuary for Thomas and Evelyn to confront shadows and navigate challenges. Together, they support Jake, weaving stories of redemption into his troubled past. The teachings of Christ and Evelyn's guidance illuminate the moral terrain.

Jake grows in faith, while Emma returns to the agency, quieting her secret struggle. However, the unexpected departure of Emma left the community rattled. The friends come together again at the close of the novel to try to work on piecing Rising Phoenix back together after it has been shocked by Emma's leaving again, leaving them more committed than ever to the cause of Rising Phoenix and the inexplicable change to come.

When Emma returns, again, there is symbolic credibility. Coming back, she surprises a community and further adds to the theme of renewal and forgiveness. As connections tighten among the people in the room, so does the thread of redemption tie more securely around the Rising Phoenix's neck with pictures of struggles shared.
