Mathias of the (formerly) Great House Kaldor just wanted to read and spend his days holed up in his dusty library. Alas, Fate decreed otherwise and what follows is an epic tale of love, bravery, blind luck, and the vital importance of personal hygiene when fighting the forces of chaos. Joined by a daemon-possessed horse, a psychotically cheerful assassin, a no-nonsense royal councilor, and a moody Lowland warrior, Mathias stumbles through a series of misadventures including barbarian invasions, court intrigues, assassination attempts, and even a soul-draining, no-holds-barred confrontation with a petty bureaucrat.
All this pales in comparison, however, to the disaster that arises when ancient transdimensional horrors gain entry to the world and begin feasting on the helpless (which is pretty much everyone if you’re talking about transdimensional horrors). Will Mathias and his companions be able to stop a catastrophe that threatens to destroy the entire Kingdom? How will they prevent every human soul from becoming the main course in a planet wide daemon buffet? And why are daemons such jerks anyway?! Nobody knows, but Mathias and his comrades are certainly going to find out! And woe to anyone who tries to stop them.
