More than two decades have passed since the asteroid mining ship Anaconda crashed into a space-time warp and emerged four centuries in the past. During that short time, two crew members oversaw a successful war of liberation in North America, two others eliminated the African slave trade, and the ship’s general manager created a modern consumer economy stretching across the Mediterranean.
Disrupting this utopian vision, a mysterious million-man army has appeared on the Russian steppes, conquering cities and absorbing their populations, threatening the ancient kingdoms of Europe. The task of figuring out who is behind this hive-like Relentless Horde and how to extinguish it peaceably falls to members of the First Generation, with technical assistance from the twin assassins Digger and Dagger Larue, along with Lu Qi, the mythical Bird Woman.
