Miriam is the daughter of Eli, the richest man in Palestine. She's rebellious, independent, and spiritually precocious. She is of an age to marry, but reluctant to accept a subservient role. She rejects "suitable candidates" proposed by her father and loses her heart to Yusuf. Yusuf is a lowly craftsman laboring on an addition to her father's estate.
