Charlotte Brontë
‘That to begin with; let respect be the foundation, affection the first floor, love the superstructure.’
The very first novel penned by Charlotte Brontë – although not published until after her death in 1857 – The Professor is a profound tale of forbidden love, mastery and, ultimately, surrender.
William Crimsworth is a sensible, studious and sensitive man looking to forge his own path in life. A failed tradesman and clerk, William takes a teaching post abroad at a girls’ boarding school, where he meets the alluring headmistress Mademoiselle Reuter who immediately captivates his attention. But when he begins mentoring the precocious and charming Frances, a teacher and student of the school, his true desires come to light. A sophisticated exploration of freedom, professional grit and companionship, The Professor remains a fascinating insight into the early creative stirrings of one of the most talented writers in literary history.
Charlotte Brontë (1816 – 1855) was an English author. Passionate about education, Charlotte left school at sixteen to teach her younger sisters, Emily and Anne. She wrote from a young age, going on to publish the seminal classic Jane Eyre (1847) under the pseudonym Currer Bell. Brontë’s writing is still widely read and studied to this day.
