    Description

Until now, Kathryn Lyons's life has been peaceful if unextraordinary: a satisfying job teaching high school in the New England mill town of her childhood; a picture-perfect home by the ocean; a precocious, independent-minded fifteen-year-old daughter; and a happy marriage whose occasional dull passages she attributes to the unavoidable deadening of time.

As a pilot's wife, Kathryn has learned to expect both intense exhilaration and long periods alone - but nothing has prepared her for the late-night knock that lets her know her husband has died in a crash. As Kathryn struggles with her grief, she descends into a maelstrom of publicity stirred up by the modern hunger for the details of tragedy.

Even before the plane is located in waters off the Irish coast, the relentless scrutiny of her husband's life begins to bring a bizarre personal mystery into focus. Could there be any truth to the increasingly disturbing rumors that he had a secret life?

Good story, could have been "more"?

I did enjoy this book, but it seems like there could have been more depth of detail, a longer suspense-building.
And why oh why Melanie Griffith? Great person, S_L_O_W reader. Sped up to 1.25 was perfect.

    Riveting

I found this book riveting and didn't eat or much else 'till I finished it!
The quality of the reader's voice was unbelievable, the way it changed so completely when Mattie was speaking, for example. DJM

    narration a little lackluster

Would you try another book from Anita Shreve and/or Melanie Griffith?

Maybe. I had trouble getting into and paying attention to this book because of it's detail overload! I felt like the story was never going to move along because so much time was spent on describing things in almost mind numbing detail. I had trouble following the story because Melanie does not change her voice for different characters. I listen to books while driving to and from work and if my mind strayed for a second or two I had trouble figuring out who was talking and had to back it up. Not my favorite, but I guess they can't all be.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I didn't understand the ending! Really can't be more specific about that without spoiling it for other readers.

Did Melanie Griffith do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Oh, my goodness no. That is my biggest complaint about this book

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    probably not.

    Boring and Pointless

From he start I found this book without excitement. I didn't really care for the characters. I didn't relate to them as they did not react as I would react and can't imagine others doing as they did. The musings of this woman seemed totally unrelated to the story being told. Their reactions and interactions between the characters were odd. Was Kathryn going to fall in love with Robert? No spoiler alert here: she didn't. Yet she invited him into the bathroom to gaze over her naked body? What was that about? Kathryn's relationship with her daughter was typical on so many levels, and not on others. The daughter reveals she became sexually active at 14 and it's almost a yawner for Kathryn. I couldn't tell when Kathryn was angry, sad, or happy. There was no passion. From the news of her husband's death to the story of how it happened there is little evidence of emotion in the story.

The narration was well done in differentiating between characters. But there was little to work with here.

I have read other books by Shreve. Some I liked, others not so much. I don't think I will try any others. I don't get her style.

I need to earn an audible badge for this audiobook

I feel a need an "I survived Melanie Griffith narration of an audio book" badge. Struggled to finish and wondered if audible would refund credits. I mean no disrespect to Ms. Griffith or the acting craft - it was just hard to follow characters, at times, due to lack of intonation and such. She never announced a chapter so if you're not looking at the screen you don't realize she's onto something new with a chapter change. Bright side is I learned a tiny piece of history with Shreve's inclusion of historical fiction and perhaps it's a better book to read and not listen. I would never choose another book narrated by Melanie Griffith. Hate to leave that type of review but feel strongly about the narration

worst narrator I've ever heard. actual story was ok, I think. sometimes hard to tell if it was only ok because of the narrator or because the story

    Worth a read

How well do we really know the people closest to us? This is the central premise of this book woven into a narrative of grief and loss. Shreve really hits her writing stride about 1/3 into the book. The story was satisfying and kept my attention. Good book club book.

    Slow moving and poorly narrated

Don’t waste your time or money
Terrible Irish accents - super slow moving … didn’t get to the real plot until 3/4 through the book

    Eh

This book was slow. Melanie Griffith read it as if she were bored. I will not recommend to anyone.
