    Description

"Ken Follett has done it once more...goes down with the ease and impact of a well-prepared martini." (New York Times Book Review)

His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

    A Riveting Thriller

I was so mesmerized by this book, it was difficult to put down. Political intrigue, back door deals, classism in England, turmoil in Russia, the looming threat of War, and so much more is in this thriller. This book almost took on a life of its own as the story progressed. Ken Follett wrote a masterful tale. Richard Armitage was brilliant in his narration.

    Riveting historical fiction

The best Ken Follett novel ever - and I’ve read nearly all of them over the last 25 years. I missed this 1982 novel because it was just rereleased in the last year or two and newly narrated brilliantly by Richard Armitage. I’ve never read or listened to a better historical novel, and have spent the last 50 years as a student of literature theatre and film.

So glad I stuck with it

Wasn’t sure initially, but this turned out to be a great read. Follett is the best storyteller. Amazing imagination.

Ken Follett is a masterful writer and Richard Armitage’s narration is simply the best! What a roller coaster of emotion. I highly recommend this book!

    Good but..

Enjoyed the first half of this book, and the historical context was interesting. But as I plodded wearily to the climactic (and predictable) ending, I found myself increasingly annoyed with nearly all the characters, and I wished it would all just end, already! A bit overwrought for me.

One of his best, a classic

Follett is a master of historical fiction. It is set in the years before the Great War, before the Russian Revolution. The husband, an English Earl, his wife a daughter of Russian Aristocracy, their daughter still sheltered of 18, yet inquisitive. A clash between love, lust and duty, Tory politics and Anarchist anger, between love and family.. Hard to avoid comparing it to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.
What is love? The excesses of the rich. The entrenchment of political ideology. Assassination plots. Well crafted,, captivating story, well written. .

    The ending......

Great plot....great set up......and although I enjoy Follet.....he's predictable when it comes to the relationship between men and women.

So....although I loved the storyline....the typical narratives of romance constrained how well this book could have been
