Will O'Brien is a discredited former Pulitzer Prize winner who now works for a tabloid because no reputable media organization will hire him. While pursuing a scandal story for his tabloid, Will discovers an older senator's recent death from a heart attack was an assassination. He makes that claim in his weekly tabloid article, which produces a mysterious informer who tells him of an incredible conspiracy by a DC lobbyist who represents South American governments, and clandestinely, drug cartels, to murder selected senators. The murders are to be staged as accidents or natural deaths. Their goal is to prevent legislation that would make the sale or distribution of certain drugs capital offences.

Will and DC Detective Zalva Martinez pursue the conspiracy through a trail of murdered senators and witnesses. No one will believe Will and even Zalva is skeptical. During his investigations, Will becomes a blip on the evil lobbyist's radar and is targeted for death, but escapes one attempt. Will discovers the only possible witness who's still alive and she agrees to be interviewed by Zalva.

Desperate to save the last remaining witness, Will and Zalva fall into a trap set by the cartel's henchmen. A trap from which escape seems hopeless . . .
