Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

"With The Maid comes an exciting and formidable new voice. A gripping and heart-warming whodunnit narrated by an intriguing and original heroine. Skillfully layered and masterfully told. I loved it." (Santa Montefiore)
"This is a fabulous debut, deftly written...I loved following Molly the maid’s struggle to make sense of the world and cheered on those who showed her kindness. The Maid is a delight from start to finish." (Jill Mansell)
"Unlike anything else I’ve read, this kept me up way past lights out. The protagonist is completely original and very endearing. Thoroughly recommend." (Katie Fforde)

Delightful
The main character of this novel is Molly Gray. She is somewhere on the Asperger's syndrome spectrum: highly intelligent, but unsure of the people and circumstances around her. She feels most comfortable in a set routine and is a germaphobe. These traits make her perfect for her job as a maid at the Grand Regency Hotel, a five star boutique hotel for the rich. Molly, abandoned by her parents and raised by her now deceased Gran, relishes nothing better than dusting, changing linens, vacuuming, waxing and polishing. The reader encounters the other hotel staff and follows Molly's quotidian routine, until one day, Molly finds a guest dead in bed. Now it is the reader, who finds himself in baffling circumstances!
The Canadian author of this debut novel, has been a long time editor for other novels. This story is fast paced and all the characters are well developed. As Molly comes to realize even about herself, "People are a mystery that never can be solved." What a "delightful" listen!
Lauren Ambrose was amazing with the delivery of the story

Reviews are spot-on!!
I put off listening to this book, it didn't really sound that , cover wasn't even all that flash but with so many positive reviews I caved and so glad I did.
It's not much of a thriller or even that suspensiveful however, right from the beginning the characters are engaging and likeable. The story, although simple hooks you in and I found it hard to turn off even at 1am.
highly recommend

Morals for all ages
This is a story about a woman with asbergers. She's wrongfully accused of murder (nothing graphic) but receives help from kind people. Expect no suspense, twists or anything complicated or technical. It's just a feel good story about fatherly kindness and doing what's right. Not what I expected from the synopsis.

Good story
None of the twists or turns in this book are ridiculous or outlandish and that makes it enjoyable. One decision by Molly the maid midway through the story was out of character and it stood out for me after the time spent in the earlier part of the book building up the robotic character. It did not fit but appears a conscious decision by the author to allow the story to unfold in a certain way. A similar uncharacteristic decision is revealed at the end and it is the reason for this 4 star rating.

Never trust the goodreads awards again
Simple story and uninteresting characters. No surprises or big twists and the only part worth mentioning is that the main character (maybe) is in the spectrum.
The narration is not bad, but the granny parts are tiresome (not a fault of the narrator) and I found disappointing that she never learnt how to pronounce Juan Manuel. C’mon, it’s a main character.

Einfach himmlisch
Tolle Geschichte, einzigartig. Wunderbar vorgetragen. Erstaunlich und trotz Krimi total unaggresiv. Ich hab es geliebt. Schade dass es zu ende ist.

If it's not well, it's not the end yet...
Loved it!!! There are some plot holes, but which story doesn't? Would totally recommend it to everyone. Ot had a bit of Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine-ish vibe, minus the darkness of the story within. Very delightful and life affirming.

Old school, in an unexpected way. Slow paced yet a lot of information to take in. The main protagonist’s constant thought process is a pleasure to follow. Nicely done.

Meh
It wasn’t a waste of time but didn’t bring any value to my life either. I have no idea how this book got raving reviews. As a mystery novel, there was barely anything to uncover. The characters were so basic, there were so many holes. The ending was just lazy.
