Description

With echoes of Just Mercy and An American Marriage, a remarkable memoir of a woman who falls in love with an incarcerated man - a poignant story of hope and disappointment that lays bare the toll prison takes not only on those behind bars, but on their families and relationships.

Ebony’s parents were high school sweethearts and married young. By the time Ebony was born, the marriage was disintegrating. As a little girl she witnessed her parents’ brutal verbal and physical fights, fueled by her father’s alcoholism. Then her father tried to kill her mother.

Those experiences drastically affected the way Ebony viewed love and set the pattern for her future romantic relationships. Despite being an educated and strong-minded woman determined not to repeat the mistakes of her parents - she would have a fairytale love - Ebony found herself drawn to bad boys: men who cheated; men who verbally abused her; men who disappointed her. Fed up, she swore to wait for the partner God chose for her.

Then she met Shaka Senghor. Though she felt an intense spiritual connection, Ebony struggled with the idea that this man behind bars for murder could be the good love God had for her. Through letters and visits, she and Shaka fell deeply in love.

Once Shaka came home, Ebony thought the worst was behind them. But Shaka’s release was the beginning of the end.

The Love Prison Made and Unmade is heartfelt. It reveals powerful lessons about love, sacrifice, courage, and forgiveness; of living your highest principles and learning not to judge someone by their worst acts. Ultimately, it is a stark reminder of the emotional cost of American justice on human lives - the partners, wives, children, and friends - beyond the prison walls.

Uncharted Territory

I just completed and enjoyed Ebony Roberts book “The Love Prison Made and Unmade ...” Memoirs are painful to write and I am grateful she shared her story - the fairytale and the sobering reality. For me, Ebony has answered questions. I have followed Shaka and the saga of her connection to Shaka Senghor, a man who spent almost two decades in prison and rose to gain national attention from his memoir NY Times Bestseller “Writing My Wrongs,” appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s programs and his TED talk. I have wanted to know the woman behind the man. Her book “The Love Prison Made and Unmade ...” has clearly answered many of those questions. Secondly, Ebony has tapped uncharted territory. She has opened the door on a topic most never consider, let alone discuss. There are hundreds of thousands of Black men caged. The mass incarceration of our men is, in my opinion, a continuation of slavery. So how do we engage these men who we need as community assets. How are women to love them? Can women love them? Can women trust them? Can they return to society and truly love us? Ebony has opened the door to a much broader discussion. Bravo Sister!

A lesson for women of what not to do....

This woman did everything for love and still didn't receive it from this narcissistic man. Women have some self worth.

Love is no fairytale

This book is much more than story about a woman dating an imprisoned man. Culture and spirituality are thoughtfully interwoven into the story. My take away... Love is no fairytale, it’s a spiritual journey rooted in culture and prior life experiences. Bold, Authentic & Vulnerable!

Very Emotional Mirror

She was raw with her story and any woman that has dealt with a man out of prison rather it be a family member or lover can benefit from this story. IT IS REAL. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome listening!

Engaging! DOPE!! I purchased this beautiful story via eBook to read while on vacation. Because of my own hectic days, I decided to finish using Audible. I am so glad I did! I remained drawn into Shaka & Ebony's love, journeys and quests to beat the odds. I didn't want to story to end! I cant wait to see what brilliance comes next. I also want to shout out Robin Miles! Bravo! I felt as if I was a fly on the wall. Great performance.
