Description

Now a USA Today and Amazon Charts best seller!

“A story both powerful and enchanting: a don’t-miss novel in the greatest southern traditions of storytelling.” (Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times best-selling author)

When her grandmother’s will wrenches Sara back home, she learns more about Margaret Van Buren in the wake of her death than she ever knew in life.

After her last remaining family member dies, Sara Jenkins goes home to The Hideaway, her grandmother Mags’s ramshackle B&B in Sweet Bay, Alabama. She intends to quickly tie up loose ends then return to her busy life and thriving antique shop in New Orleans. Instead, she learns Mags has willed The Hideaway to her and charged her with renovating it - no small task considering her grandmother’s best friends, a motley crew of senior citizens, still live there.

Rather than hurrying back to New Orleans, Sara stays in Sweet Bay and begins the biggest house-rehabbing project of her career. Amid drywall dust, old memories, and a charming contractor, she discovers that slipping back into life at The Hideaway is easier than she expected.

Then she discovers a box Mags left in the attic with clues to a life Sara never imagined for her grandmother. With help from Mags’s friends, Sara begins to piece together the mysterious life of bravery, passion, and choices that changed her grandmother’s destiny in both marvelous and devastating ways.

When an opportunistic land developer threatens to seize The Hideaway, Sara is forced to make a choice - stay in Sweet Bay and fight for the house and the people she’s grown to love or leave again and return to her successful but solitary life in New Orleans.

What a wonderful story

What a wonderful story of love lost and family found. Young Sara couldn’t see past her grandmother’s quirky ways. Just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover.

ugh. like a Hallmark movie.

Boring. Really shallow and predictable. The audio was just odd and not easy to listen to.

This was not a very original story, was quite predictable, and had a mediocre delivery.

Great Book Club Discussion

This book wasn't a compelling read, enticing me to move on to the next chapter to see what happened next, but it was pleasant. The writing was fine. The way I described it at book club was "like a comfy pair of old sneakers." Nothing flashy to draw your attention like a new pair of sparkly sandals. Just a nice, comfortable pair of shoes to get you through your everyday tasks. It was the perfect book for bedtime. I liked the narrator, although one of my book club friends found her to by too syrupy at times. (I think that may be because we are northerners who just aren't used to the authentic, low country cadence).

Our book club of 12 women all agreed that it was an okay story - no one loved it and no one hated it. We all suspected it would have led to a flat discussion, but it inspired us to share many compelling personal stories, some about secrets in our families. Those personal stories are the fabric of our book club; the substance of a warm, patchwork quilt of comfort. If you are in a book club based on friendship, this is a wonderful choice.

Good writing

One of the 2 main plots glorified infidelity in a way I found annoying. I bought it for a book club but wish I hadn't bothered listening to it.

Very Weak

This book's content and narrator was extremely weak. I am very sorry that I used one of my credits to purchase it. I finished it only because I hate to leave a book unfinished however, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Narration is difficult

I like the story okay but the narration is not so good. I cannot distinguish the characters as the narrator does not change her voice between characters. Her voice is not young enough for the character Sarah. Same voice for all characters so that when I stop and then go back later I have no idea which character is speaking.
