The king of Narvonne is dead, and the capital has fallen.
Trist and his allies have defeated the daemon Adrammelech, and in the aftermath of the battle, the conflict between Narvonne and the Caliphate of Ma'in has been set aside. Reunited with his wife, Clarisant, at Falais castle, Trist is finally starting to feel comfortable with the duties and power of an Exarch.
A message from the capital of Lutetia brings word that the Baron du Champs d'Or has rebelled, bringing a combined army of his own vassals and Kimmerian mercenaries to seize the throne for himself.
Now, Trist must become the sword of Narvonne's new king. More and more daemons are breaking their chains, and unless he can grow powerful enough to stand against them, his home village of Camaret-à-Arden will be destroyed—along with what is left of his family.
