Description
“This delicious combination of Clue and The Great British Bakeoff kept me turning the pages all night!”—Janet Evanovich, #1 New York Times bestselling author
Only Murders in the Building meets The Maid in this darkly beguiling locked-room mystery where someone turns up dead on the set of TV’s hottest baking competition—perfect for fans of Nita Prose, Richard Osman, and Anthony Horowitz.
Every summer for the past ten years, six awe-struck bakers have descended on the grounds of Grafton, the leafy and imposing Vermont estate that is not only the filming site for “Bake Week” but also the childhood home of the show’s famous host, celebrated baker Betsy Martin.
The author of numerous bestselling cookbooks and hailed as “America’s Grandmother,” Betsy Martin isn’t as warm off-screen as on, though no one needs to know that but her. She has always demanded perfection, and gotten it with a smile, but this year something is off. As the baking competition commences, things begin to go awry. At first, it’s merely sabotage—sugar replaced with salt, a burner turned to high—but when a body is discovered, everyone is a suspect.
A sharp and suspenseful thriller for mystery buffs and avid bakers alike, The Golden Spoon is a brilliant puzzle filled with shocking twists and turns that will keep you listening late into the night until you finish the very last minute of this incredible debut.

A Really Fun Listen
Ever wondered what would happen if you took contestants of your favorite reality show and thrust them into a mystery? Baking show turned whodunnit, I enjoyed this book! I loved the winks to The Great British Baking Show, especially ersatz Prue Lieth and Paul Hollywood, and the mysteries were fun to explore (if not necessarily difficult to figure out).
The actors were all great and really helped me to keep track of the characters while listening. I had heard some criticism that the characters were a bit one-dimensional, and while I don't necessarily disagree, for me that just added to their "reality show" personas. We almost never get the full picture of someone on television, and it felt like each of these characters fit neatly into their assigned competition show spot. It made it all the more intriguing to see what The Overconfident One, The Ingenue, The Elder, The Beginner, etc. would do when faced with something more intense than what glaze to use.
There are several smaller mysteries and one very large one, and even though none of them are particularly hard to figure out, the characters made each one a fun ride.

Silly, Trite, and Predictable
Maybe this just wasn’t my genre, but I found this story to be very predictable and the characters stereotypical.

Worth my Audible credit
I blasted through Only Murders in the Building so this intrigued me. I really enjoyed hearing the story unfold from multiple characters. The narrators were all bad ass and made the story enthralling. Lottie and Stella were my favorite. I found myself guessing who the murderer was, where it was committed and how. I admit I got it wrong. Sweet plot twist.

Delicious Mystery
Absolutely loved the fresh original premise of the book. There are some twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Some of the characters voices weren’t awesome but I could get through it. Would definitely recommend!

Terrible Narration
The story itself is really obvious, but that is fine, that is what I enjoy about cozy mysteries. It’s the predictability is comforting. This would have far more enjoyable reading than listening to. I don’t often say this, but the female narrators were awful, especially whoever read as Stella-every SINGLE syllable was painfully enunciated- no one actually speaks that way. Even the way she said her name: Stel-la, or, a-part-ment, let-ter; it was painful to listen to. The male characters were natural, and easy to listen to. The story takes up to the last two hours for anything to actually happen. Slow story but the worse part is the female narrators.

Meh
I love a good baking competition show. I love a good murder mystery. This premise had so much potential but it just didn’t deliver. I didn’t care about the characters and the mystery wasn’t that deep.

Based on GB Bake Off but not very good.
No comparison to Paul and Pru. Author saw Bake Off but doesn't understand why it works. These characters are one dimensional and I didn't find any especially interesting. A true miss of an opportunity 😣

Meh story, terrible narration
The story was ok, but for the most part it was boring. The narration was terrible from most of the readers, some so bad I could barely listen

NOTHING LIKE GBBO! NOTHING LIKE A MYSTERY
So predictable. A lot of unlikeable characters. A MILLION trite overused plot tropes. You could see the end at the beginning. Ridiculous, pat "happy-ending". The narration was not good, but even top level narration couldn't save this story.

Very fun
The narrators were great and the story was funny, entertaining, and baking-centric. Very enjoyable listen.
