“Enjoyable, entertaining, engaging fantasy.” (Tor.com)

At the Emperor's Command

Multiple races carefully navigate the City of Elantra under the Dragon Emperor’s wing. His Imperial Wolves are executioners, the smallest group to serve in the Halls of Law. The populace calls them assassins.

Every wolf candidate must consent to a full examination by the Tha’alani, one of the most feared and distrusted races in Elantra for their ability to read minds. Most candidates don’t finish their job interviews.

Severn Handred, the newest potential recruit, is determined to face and pass this final test — even if by doing so he’s exposing secrets he has never shared.

When an interrogation uncovers the connections to a two-decade-old series of murders of the Tha’alani, the Wolves are commanded to hunt. Severn’s first job will be joining the chase. From the High Halls to the Tha’alani quarter, from the Oracles to the Emperor, secrets are uncovered, tensions are raised and justice just might be done…if Severn can survive.

New perspective in a favorite world

I so enjoyed getting a peak at Severn's time with the Wolves. The author did a great job balancing between giving us totally new info and characters and giving us additional perspective on the events in the Chronicles of Elantra series. Definitely worth a credit.

more please

The world Michelle creates in the Cast series, and now this side story, is one of my favorites. I have always had a fondness for Severn and this story only further entrenches my love for him as a character. Getting some insight into his background was enlightening and has me wanting more. Can't wait for the second book (and hopefully more) to come!

WOW JUST WOW!

Wow , I love the Alantra series. My favorite characters are Kaylin & Sevrin. I am so very happy that this is a spin off of them. I always wondered about the wolf lord and was so pleased to get to meet him and several other new characters in this book. Ms. Sagara is such a wonderful author that can transport her readers so you feel that you are apart of her books, she literally describes the places and feelings and you can see and feel the things she writes. She is my favorite author to date. I am patiently waiting for next books in both series.

Excellent and long waited for

This is a spin off from the Chronicles of Elantra series, but you don’t need to read that series to follow and enjoy this book. This book is part of the back story for Severn, one of my favorite characters from the Cast books. It tells us how he came to be a Wolf; how he met the Tha’alani Cast Lord Ybelline, the Keeper Evanton, and the Eternal Emperor; and his introduction to the High Halls. The characters were engaging and the plot was interesting. The pace was well done. It was definitely worth the credit and I’ll probably listen to the book again every time a new book comes out in the series. I can’t wait for the next book which is supposed to be Severn’s journey to the West March. Kristine Hvam, who also narrates the Cast novels, did a great job and the voices of the characters were consistent with their voices in the Cast novels which I really appreciate. The only criticism I have is that the pronunciation for Ellieann was different in this book than in the Cast novels. Probably not a big deal to most, but did make me cringe the first time I heard it. I liked the diversity of her voices for the characters which makes it easy to keep track of who is talking. The tone she gives the book is exactly what I imagine the author intended.

Great First Book in a New Series!

"I love the "The Chronicles of Elantra" series, and this tale of Severn is just as captivating. It answered questions I didn't even know I had!

A must for fans!

I enjoyed it so much that I am rereading Elantra books from the beginning. This book gave me a new and interesting perspective to the original series and now that I am rereading again, there are new discoveries and details that I forgot. So, this book kind of doubles the enjoyment of reading the original series. After rereading Cast in Shadows again, I am about done with rereading Cast in Courtlight now, and because I read Emperor’s Wolves it gave depth to the scene where Severn relives his worst nightmare. This book satisfied my curiosity about knowing Severn’s life before becoming a Hawk but unfortunately it didn’t satisfy my wish to understand Severn better. I mean he is not a talkative person to begin with, I suppose even when he is the main character. He rarely talks about his feelings or expresses himself. So it was a joy to read others describe him a lot in this novel, It was also fun to read that in the Wolves, Severn was the one who complicated and be the intrepid/bold one to get in trouble while pursuing his case. Additionally, I now understand the Wolves much better as well as Ybelline Rabon'alani and her cast system which I didn’t expect. I was also surprised with how much Severn has kept to himself, but then I suppose his missions as shadow wolf were all covert missions. I look forward to reading about the time he goes to the West March for the first time. (from my goodreads review)

FINALLY Severn's secrets and the mysterious Wolves

I just finished "The Emperor's Wolves" and it was amazing! It was exactly what I'd hoped for -Severn is such an intriguing character, but generally so quiet that I read his part of Kaylin's stories again and again hoping for a better picture of him. What does he think? Why does he make the decisions he makes? How can he remain Kaylin's friend and support after so many years of being separated from her? We were given bits and pieces throughout the "Cast In" books and we see some of their past and a little of their friendship, but I never really understood him. Marcus, Teela, Ebyline, Tiamaris, the Archen and so many others all got their story (and I know I am butchering the spelling of the names), but it's Severn I've wanted to know and to understand his complicated relationship with Kaylin. This was the perfect combination of their history, his beginning and his story with the Wolves and an intriguing, complicated mystery to solve! I loved getting to know the Wolves, more about other characters in the "Cast In" books and Severn's perspective. It's a great story even if you haven't read the other books, but I really enjoyed seeing the other characters through his eyes. Kristine Hvam nails the voices as always! I love her characterizations and the way she can change voices and keep the characters consistent!

great introduction to our favorite wolf's history

story was great. some of the story was kind of a divergent from the histories explained and interaction evolved in the chronicles story line but easy to overlook. enjoyable listen and great read by the narrator.
