Claire Sherril, a psychologist, refurbishes Chartres House, her antebellum mansion into a Bed and Breakfast. On opening night, seven guests arrive. Is the number seven unlucky? The evening progresses.
After dinner, a scream pierces the genteel air. Someone kills the house hostess by impaling a fork into her neck and leaving her body in a powder room.
Police arrive. There is no settling down for the night only fearful retreats as the sheriff orders the guests into their rooms. Around midnight, a ruckus on the lawn brings a second horror. A guest, a mystery writer's body lies on the lawn.
Did she jump from the third-floor window or was she pushed? Who among the guests is a diabolical killer and why?
