Description

Australian crime reporter Maddie Grey is out of her depth in New York, miserable, and secretly drawn to her powerful, twice-married media mogul boss, Elena Bartell, who eats failing newspapers for breakfast. As work takes them to Australia, Maddie is goaded into a brief, seemingly harmless bet with her enigmatic boss - where they have to tell the complete truth to each other. It backfires catastrophically.

Very surprising!

A lot of other reviewers said it is like The Devil Wears Prada, but in only context of the fashion industry. I really enjoyed the book and the narrator did a good job with the different voices and accents. It was also nice to have a romantic novel without the sex scenes every other page. It’s has also a good message of how truthfulness can be a hinderance or allowing for further dialogue. I do hope I can more of the author’s work on Audible. I literally couldn’t put down my headphones.

An outstanding book

I absolutely loved the book when I read it. I loved the interaction between the two main characters and how hints at Elena's character were revealed. It was fun reading about their interactions and Elena's reluctant toleration of Maddie growing to an appreciation and a need. This harkens back to old black and white movies with witty banter between the two main characters.

But Ms Dawe turns out to vastly enhance the book, which i didn't think possible. She perfectly conveys Maddie's emotions and provides a really humanizing portrayal of Maddie, especially her shock and embarrasment, which happens a lot in this book. She makes Maddie completely adorable and wonderful.

She also makes Felicity just borderline awful, but just the right side of awfully high strung.

This is one of my favorite audiobooks.

This has to be one of my all time favorites. The narration is the BEST I've heard and I've heard over a hundred books. I can't recommend this book enough. Great characters, great story.

Excellent Audio!

I loved The Brutal Truth. It's a cross between an Ice Queen romance and a falling for your boss workplace romance. I thought both main characters were very relatable. Angela Dawe does an excellent job with the narration.

Very entertaining

I haven't read The Brutal Truth before listening to this audiobook, so this was the first time I met the story.
It's clearly based on The Devil Wears Prada, but it's very well written and very entertaining.
And the narrator Angela Dawe was amazing with all the different accents and voices, but also with story telling - an absolute delight and this story lets her show her talent. Brilliant.

A thing of beauty

I never write reviews but for this book I just had to say a couple of things. The interaction of the characters was so engaging it was difficult to step away from listening. The narrator was perfect in a way that made her slip away and all that was left was the story she told in my mind. Then there was a love scene. What can I say. It was a slow roll up hill, and a beautiful glide back down. It was one of the best I can recall hearing. A Truthful Thank You to both the author and narrator.

A delight!

I just discovered Lee Winter. What a treat! Appreciated the complexities of the main characters and the evolution of their relationship. The narrator was awesome too. Totally recommending this book and audible.

Charming as hell!

Mind that I am male. Usually I go for love stories from the perspective of a male Protagonist But the character off Maddie (or Madelaine - as I come to prefer) is so convincing and captivating, that it seems to be the most natural thing of the world that a woman falls in love with another woman. Even if the other one is a person as frightening and sometimes apalling as Ellena Bartell. The Storytelling in this novel is smooth and convincing from the beginning to the end with a plentiful of moving moments and a lot of tremendous character development - not only for the main characters but also for the supporting characters - especially Felicity, Perry and Natalii. Even minor characters like Maddie's mom or Natalii's fiancé are quite enjoyable. I liked the written book, but I LOVE the Audio Book for the charming Narration of Angela Dawe, who works out the different characters in great detail and delivers their emotions to the point.

Good but not great

Reader: The accents were on point, very clear, matches the story well.

The story: Quite long, I feel like it is dragged out, basically a typical romance book except that the haughty powerful dominant and handsome /beautiful character is a woman.

Very well narrated, good story

The story is very well written! It is a very very slow burn novel, nevertheless time flies by.
Angela Dawe the narrator knows what she is doing because one doesn’t need to concentrate on the characters, you can hear the difference.

Das Buch zum Leben erweckt

The brutal truth ist eins meiner Lieblingsbücher.

Longest winning streak ever

Brilliant. Intriguing , charming and breath taking at moments. I enjoyed the Australian accent of the narrator a lot. It is a long story and it is worth it. Gonna go and buy myself another on of her books.
