This book is very dynamic from the start. You might expect a slow setup, but it kicks off quickly with something unexpected—yet totally plausible. It’s the perfect way to bring Mickey Haller back into action as a lawyer. It also gives us a deeper look into his mindset and personal struggles. As always with Michael Connelly, there’s no “success story” between books. His main characters don’t come back shining. That’s the case for Haller here. After book one, we might have thought he would be successful, personally and professionally, but that’s not what happened. Still, he’s back on track now. One of the highlights is his encounter with Harry Bosch. They’re very different, but the way they interact is fascinating. There’s respect, tension, and a unique chemistry that makes their scenes really enjoyable. All the cases Haller handles are interesting, from the surfer to the Hollywood producer. That producer character is especially well written: genuine, deep, and original. You’ll be pulled into the story right away. It’s a true page-turner, you lose track of time, eager to know what happens next. There’s a lot going on: Who killed the previous lawyer? What’s going to happen between Haller and Bosch? What’s the deal with the producer and all the other cases? How does it all connect? It’s smart, well constructed, and the final twist is completely unexpected.
