Celebrate the Dude with an abiding look at the philosophy behind The Big Lebowski.
Is the Dude a bowling-loving stoner or a philosophical genius living the good life? Naturally, it's the latter, and The Big Lebowski and Philosophy explains why. Enlisting the help of great thinkers like Plato and Nietzsche, the book explores the movie's hidden philosophical layers, cultural reflection, and political commentary. It also answers key questions, including:
The Dude abides, but is abiding a virtue? Is the Dude an Americanized version of the Taoist way of life? How does The Big Lebowski illustrate the Just War Theory? How does bowling help Donny, Walter, and the Dude oppose nihilism?
Yes, the Dude is deep, and so is this book. Don't watch the movie - or go to Lebowski Fest - without it. This book:
- Explores many of The Big Lebowski's key themes, such as nihilism, war and politics, money and materialism, idealism and morality, history, and more
- Gives you new perspective on the movie's characters: the Dude, the Big Lebowski, Walter Sobchak, Donny, Maude Lebowski, Bunny Lebowski, and others
- Helps you appreciate the Coen Brothers classic even more with the insights of Aristotle, Epicurus, Kant, Derrida, and other philosophical heavyweights

The Book Abides
So the book isn't that good BUT hearing all of the funny quotes from one of the funniest movies of all time makes it completely worth it. Some interesting perspectives here and there as well - and the narrator is good too. Now that I'm done writing this, I think I'll go watch the movie again!

I don't know if it's the reader or the writing
Would you try another book from William Irwin and Peter S. Fosl (editor) and/or Darren Stephens?
Probably Not but never say never (see below)
Would you ever listen to anything by William Irwin and Peter S. Fosl (editor) again?
I'd have to get a resounding recommendation to give them another shot. Can't wait to hear how Jeff Bridges book compares.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Darren Stephens?
Anyone that sounds less like Tom Brokaw and more like Jeff Bridges. His quotes and reading of lines in the movie are just so monotone. Maybe make sure the narrator watched the movie?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Big Lebowski and Philosophy?
I don't know - it sounds so Philosophy 101. So dry. I know I'm only 35 minutes into this 7 hour community college lecture (my apologies to all the good Philosophy professor's that teach at CC) but it is way to dry. I can listen to J. Krishnamurti for hours despite sometimes difficult accent but can not handle this. I'll be interested to see a great review of this....maybe I'm way off base. Yawn.
Any additional comments?
Great if your having trouble sleeping, it takes the cake on televised LPGA for background noise that will have you sawing logs in no time!
