This was meant to be the perfect honeymoon. A five-star beach resort in Vietnam, with white sands, private villas and world-class cuisine. A chance for newlyweds Asha and Ollie Graveney to recover from a tragedy that has left them on the verge of collapse. Except things don't go as planned. When Asha wakes up in hospital after a brutal attack, her husband is nowhere to be found. And paradise has turned into a nightmare....
Description
From Alafair Burke - New York Times best-selling author of the runaway hit The Wife - comes another twisty tale of domestic noir. When a prominent Manhattan lawyer is murdered, two estranged sisters - one the dead man’s widow, the other his ex - must set aside mistrust and old resentments...but can they escape their past?
Though Chloe was the younger of the two Taylor sisters, she always seemed to be in charge. She was the honor-roll student with big dreams and an even bigger work ethic. Nicky was always restless...and more than a little reckless - the opposite of her ambitious little sister. She floated from job to job and man to man and stayed close to home in Cleveland.
For a while, it seemed like both sisters had found happiness. Chloe earned a scholarship to an Ivy League school and moved to New York City, where she landed a coveted publishing job. Nicky married promising young attorney Adam Macintosh and gave birth to a baby boy they named Ethan. The Taylor sisters became virtual strangers.
Now, more than 15 years later, their lives are drastically different - and Chloe is married to Adam. When he’s murdered by an intruder at the couple’s East Hampton beach house, Chloe reluctantly allows her teenaged stepson’s biological mother - her estranged sister, Nicky - back into her life. But when the police begin to treat Ethan as a suspect in his father’s death, the two sisters are forced to unite...and to confront the truth behind family secrets they have tried to bury in the past.

A better reader, maybe?
The book was really good, but the reader, who dropped every d or n from each contracted would, should, could, did, etc, and who mispronounced words frequently, did not sound like a highly educated woman, which the character was supposed to be. She sounded unsophisticated.

Decent Alafair Burke Story, Awful Narration
The lady narrator has a voice I could Not get into. I had to replay parts multiple times to concentrate on what was going on. Moving up the speed to 1.0 helped some. But honestly couldn't wait for it to be over.

I loved this book!
I have read The Ex and The Wife and thought both were ok, not fantastic. This book has a lot more depth, and the characters are much better developed. I really liked the thematic elements. I also liked the court drama - it was refreshingly realistic - and the twists throughout. I usually read this type of book for the twists, but those almost became secondary to the larger storyline. And I mean that in the best way possible. I highly recommend this book.

THE BETTER SISTER is not the author's BETTER book
I have listened to several of the author's books and her books have consistently improved with each title....until this one.
THE BETTER SISTER was awful. I kept on waiting for it to get "BETTER" but it never did. Quite frankly, I had to pinch myself several times to keep myself from falling asleep. Even the narrators were sounding very sleepy to me.....which did not help the uncompelling storyline.
What happened to you, Alafair Burke? "The Wife" was outstanding.....so we know that you definitely can do BETTER.

W.O.W. !!
Alafair Burke really knocks it out of the park with this one!! She is truly gifted and clearly understands her audience. This one was my favorite of her three most recent novels, though not by much, and the narration was not as compelling as those voiced by Xe Sands. That said, DON'T miss this book!

Great narration, great book
You won’t be disappointed, definitely ha as lot of associations with today’s political scene. Not a political book by any means but definitely relevant to today. Was definitely surprised by the ending on who actually committed the murder... don’t want to give away anything but it’s def worth a Credit. You won’t be disappointed.

The better sister
It was a decent story line and I like narrator but it was hard not to hate both sisters. I normally become very invested in at least one of the characters but I didn’t feel any sympathy or empathy towards any of the players. I thought Chloe was a fake activist/feminist, she was very weak and of course a lair. I found Nicky even more unlikable trying too hard to sound “cool” or free spirit and it just didn’t work. Ethan was also not relatable or likable for that matter. Overall I enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down so good listen with some character flaws.
